I recently moved to London from Los Angeles and while I took my computer with me I did not take a monitor over because it was too large and bulky to take both. So, basically I've been stuck with a computer but no way to use it and therefore all I can do is type this message at work. As a result, I need a monitor ASAP but I don't want to get just anything as this new monitor is expected to last me a good while.
I've given up on the TN panels since I can't find one with a contrast ratio that hits at least 900:1 static and still gives off accurate colors and black levels after calibration. Therefore, I've decided to stick to IPS and PVA and while I don't really care that their viewing angles are better as I will sit directly in front of them, I do like their 8-bit panels, better colors, and better blacks (well these four monitors below anyway).
Here is what I've chosen but can't decide on:
NEC EA231wmi
Dell U2311h
Eizo EV2333wh
Samsung F2380m
I generally use my computer for gaming and television/movies so a good picture is absolutely essential. I'm not competitive in Battlefield or anything like that which is why I've listed monitors which may be a bit slower than gaming TN's. Obviously the Dell is the fastest and the NEC is it's predecessor without overdrive. However, the NEC has a dynamic contrast function which actually works and brings the contast ratio up to 3000:1 like the Samsung F2380m which is perfect for movies and will remind me of my old plasma television. The Eizo is probably the best monitor in terms of picture quality despite the fact that the contrast ratio is around 2500:1. The only problem with both the Samsung and the Eizo are their response times, with the Samsung being the worst by far. I wouldn't say I'm susceptible to ghosting but I used to see it when playing Xbox 360 on a 42'' LCD TV during fast scenes with lots of explosions. The NEC and Dell would be better suited for this situation but their quality control issues bother me as this is the UK, not the US where returns may be easier. Also, I can't stand backlight bleeding if it's obvious like on my laptop at work during movies as I watch a lot of subtitled films which aren't in 16:9 format.
Anyway, all four monitors seem to be pretty awesome and I just can't decide where to take the compromise. Ghosting or uniformity issues, Deep blacks or okay blacks (Dell). Well, if any of you have owned one of these monitors and could give your input as to how they handle movies and games that would be great. I really need to buy one like tomorrow because I'm getting sick of sitting in my apartment and being forced to watch British TV. It's just not the same as Hollywood
