Strange problem in CPU-Z?

I have a 3.6ghz, when I open CPU-Z it show 3.6ghz, then switchs to 2.8ghz. And switches again (rarely) but is 70% of the time on 2.8ghz.

See what I mean? I don't think it's underclocked but I have a Asus P5AD2-E Premium with CPU Lock Free on AUTO.
Any Ideas?
 
Perfectly normal. Same rig here.

If I leave my multiplier @ 18, mine will do it to. It reduces the multiplier to reduce the clock when you are not putting load on the cpu. If you run a program like F@H, it will not reduce the multiplier, and will stay at 3.6.

Isn't this thermal management? Or is it SpeedStep?

I saw a program which would graph the processor's actual operating frequency over time, showing when it is being throttled. Does anyone know where I might find that program? I can't remember the name and I'm having a hard time searching.

This is closer to speed step than thermal throttleing. As it happens when the CPU is unloaded vice loaded. Its called Power Management throttleing. Cut and Pasted from the ThrottleWatch site (link later in post).
Power Management Throttling is a feature of Intel Pentium M, Mobile Intel Pentium 4 (5xx Series only), Intel Pentium 4 ("J" suffix only), and AMD Athlon64 processors. Power Management Throttling is a technique of dynamically lowering the CPU's core speed and voltage during intervals of low system load, with the goal of reducing power consumption and extending battery life and/or lowering fan noise.

Thermal throttling happens when your CPU is too hot, around 70C or more is when it should kick in.

I think the program you are thinking of is Throttle watch .

I have a P5AD2-Deluxe. I've been a little underwhelmed with its performance.

After downloading ThrottleWatch, I'm worried that the problem is thermal throttling. The docs for ThrottleWatch are rather marginal. What, exactly, is the "throttling history" graph showing me?

What ratio is the "TM1 Throttling" graph expressing?

Here's a screen shot with one thread running hard for a while, then stopped so the machine goes back to idle.

anything greater than 0 in the TM1 graph, while 100% load, is NOT GOOD.

0% load and throttling... most likely speedstep sorta thing.

go pick up SpeedFan 4.22, which supports tempurature monitoring for our board, and watch your CPU temps.... Thermal throttling kicks in around 72-73C for my 560J... for your CPU it may be less, it may be more. Speedfan 4.22 has a few fanspeed issues with our board so I'm using 4.21, maybe I could email it to you somehow if you really want it.

I would most definitly start watching temps. You may have a BIG PROBLEM.

(ok "yelling" may not be neccessary, but hey... if you over heat your CPU to thermal throttle thats a big cooling issue)

Sheesh! I didn't like the LGA775 HSF when I installed it, and I certainly don't have a better opinion of it now.

I cracked my case to find that a couple of the plastic push-pins weren't locked, and that the heatsink wasn't making solid contact with the top of the processor. If I pushed on the heatsink, the throttling numbers would go down, as would teh temperature.

I took everything apart, cleaned the pad material off, greased it up with some Thermalloy paste, and got everything put back together ... on the third try. I just can't stand the mounting system for these processors. Until Intel makes something more sensible, I'm officially an AMD guy.

This machine is back to running full speed with no throttling, and the CPU temperature has dropped to 56-57C from 65-68C.

Anyway, thanks for the tips!

Hey, don't knock Intel too badly... Chances are, if you did have an AMD and the HSF would come loose, you wouldn't have a working CPU by now :)
But I agree, Intel had the best system ever, in that 'cradle' thing they used on Socket 478. I don't see why they would abandon that in favour of this silly system.

You're saying AMD parts won't shut themselves down when they overheat? That's what the Socket 478 parts did before this throttling thing came along. The ThrottleWatch website says that the Athlon-64 parts have similar thermal throttling, though I notice the program doesn't detect any such feature on my dual-proc Opteron box.

I think a problem I had with a recent BIOS upgrade was because that BIOS upgrade disabled throttling by default, and when not throttled, my machine would end up overheating and shut itself down.

Throttling has been in all P4s, so even before Socket 478.
And shutdown has been in at least the PIII, possibly the PII aswell, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
I don't know if any AMDs have throttling yet, but I do know that the older Athlons didn't even shut down at all, they just burnt up. Which is what I was referring to.

yeah, AMD chips havent done that since palomino (thouroghbred fixed it)
