Strange Headphone Problem

Ever since I installed an Audigy 2ZS Gamer the right speaker of all of my headphones (Sennheiser HD-150 and a few lower end models) have slowly died until they dont work at all. My current headphones (Koss UR-19, cheap I know) have managed to "stabilize" and they will work fine if I max out the volume and lower the volume % of my left speaker to 52%. I mainly use them for gaming and I have not dropped them.

My two questions are:
1. How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
2. Will buying higher quality headphones make a difference?

Man that is really strange. I have never had that happen to me with any audio source on my headphones, no matter how loud I have the volume... Overall I'd have to say that's somewhat abnormal.
