So I decided to pick up a CM Storm Scout to replace my aging Lian Li PC-7b Plus II. I always hear that "once you go Lian Li, you'll never go back". For $95 shipped, though, I think the Storm Scout offers a far better value than anything else in its price range. It's a spectacular case and I enjoy working with it.

The only thing that bothers me, really, aside from a more significant issue that I'll post about at a future date, is that the red LEDs on the included LED fans are dim. Cooler Master appears to have gone with some sort of proprietary two-pin connector for the LEDs, so I was wondering if anyone knows if I could somehow wire in, say, a cathode or EL strip, etc., to the switch for a little extra lighting.
 
I am very interested in this as well. If not a cathode tube, simply other CM fans with the LED pins that I could tap into the switch.

Can I simply splice the LED wires into the switch wires?
 
Yes you can. I'm using the Scout temporary until my other case is finished. The LED button is nothing but a switch in between one of the wires (red) or (black) that when pressed completes the circuit. I took the two wires coming from the switch and cut them about a foot.

So all the excess wires with the molex connectors are not needed. You then take the two wires and connect one end to the ground (or hot) of a molex and the other end to the ground (or hot) of a cathode, EL strip, or whatever you want connected. After you have all the connections completed, just hit the switch and it completes the whole circuit to whatever you connected and it works just fine.

Thanks 3D ... I'm wondering how many fans you can tap into the switch wiring before it just can't handle the load? For now my cooling is pretty decent with just the stock fans so I'm just aiming to install a cathode and harness that to the switch. But given the different voltages, I think it's more involved so I've been researching the use of a relay to pull it off.
 
The switch is nothing more then that, a switch to close the circuit and to open the circuit. I would assume you could put 8 fans or 10 ccfl's. The way the wiring is by default makes it look complicated. Once you remove the top of the case where the control panel is attached too, you can better see that it's just 2 wires. If I remember correctly they have one wire splicing into two.

Just remember that the switch is just completing 1 wire connection. So for fans or ccfl's which just use 2 wires. 1 ground, and 1 12v or 1 5v, you'll be good... Have fun with it... Be creative.
 
I don't have my scout any longer so I can't verify this but I'm pretty sure the LED outputs from the top panel are powered. I've heard of people blowing the circuit under too much load so some have wired in relays and use the panel wiring to trigger the relay. There is also a 4 pin molex power plug for the top panel which would support this.

Now, on the new 690 II it is a dumb switch, nothing more.

Of course it's also possible that they've changed the Scout design. I bought mine when they first came out. After seeing the 690 II LED setup it's likely that they would go simple across the board.

Are you referring to the power LED and the HD LED? Or are you referring to the switch? The switch isn't powered. The molex that's connected to the switch is what you need to power the LED's on the fans. The switch closes the circuit for the molex connector connected for power. A simple follow of how the wires are for the switch confirms this. You can remove all the wiring and have the 2 wires left over.

I did this and I'm using it for the +12v for a ccfl. I have one of the wires connected to the molex and the other wire connected to the +12v wire for the ccfl. When the switch is activated it completes the circuit.

Follow the wiring of the switch and it confirms it's not powered.
 
Perhaps they had changed the way the switch works on the Scout but I did try to simply tap into the switch wiring to power a 12v LED strip and it didn’t work. I had to make use of a relay the details of which I in this thread.

What I would like to do now is have the switch complete a circuit for a terminal block from which all my fans and lighting will be connected. As a bonus play, I would also like all the fans in the terminal block to be passed through a fan header on the motherboard (I have 4 unused headers) so I can control and monitor their speeds.

I may try doing this after I’ve finished sleeving.
