When playing games in one monitor having a program like IRC (or the forums) open in another, pressing esc in most games allow you to have your cursor so you can navigate to the other window but as soon as you click on anything in the other window the game minimizes.

The only fix i have found so far for this is to just run the game in a window.

Any ideas?

I think that might be the only solution. Whenever the game window losses focus, it minimizes.

dang that stinks.. friend of mine said using the program UltraMon let him do it but for some reason it wont let me. not sure why, neither is he.

Well you can use Xfire. It uses overlay chat windows so they appear over your game window while the game window is still in focus. To chat in a game you press something like ctrl+x. It works just great however last time I used it, you could only chat with one person that way.

UltraMon has never done that for me. It was prolly just one game that it worked on for him or something...

There are some programs that trick games into running in windows using program hooks to inject some extra code on startup. The FFXI Windower makes FFXI run in a window and using Ultramon you can keep the game up and click on stuff on the other display without losing focus at all.

not to be an ass but, I have been doing this for years, nothing really new. head over to www.reatimesoft.com lots of multi monitor info there...

google has a bunch of good links as well...

a lot of games I run window mode so I can do other things if i need to... Running everquest or wow in window mode is a must if you need to look up info on the web and stuff.

You've done this with games in fullscreen mode? Because that's what this thread is about...

as for full screen, not going to happen... this has been talked about for years... current 3D API's running full screen take over the system. thats why you have to run in window mode...

Yeah, he knows about running games in Windowed mode... He wants to know how to so it while in fullscreen. Why would he start a thread asking how to do something he already knows about?

That's cool. I just wanted, to help with the questions window mode or not. trust me I wish games could play full screen and do ohter things on other displays like video or what ever. but untill something happens hardware or software, just cant do it right now.

good luck...

well i can do other things on my other display like run a video lol... but that wasnt the question at all, its all a matter of loosing focus.(no pun intended)

so the consensus is that This is impossible to do without running in windowed mode?

do you know of one that does it for other games besides FFXI?

Nothing I've seen really, the FFXI trick is that it makes a window that fits the entire screen inside, it makes a window with no sides that fits over the whole monitor, when i click on the other screen the start bar comes over ffxi but the game stays up, i just have to click back into the game to start playing again, of course being that it's an MMO it's hard to stay away for long, I've been playing since 2002 and this hack has been around basically the whole time, it's a difficult thing to do, lots of the code injected to make this happen changes with every version update to get around SquareEnix' 3rd party tool protection stuff, and if the code ever got released, well, the FFXI economy/world would be in a world of hurt from cheaters/more rmt, etc.

That startbar thing happens to me when I'm watching WMP in full screen and click the other screen. I've found an interesting workaround for this though. If I double-click my WMP video for fullscreen, and then click over to the other screen really fast before the video gets into fullscreen then the taskbar wont show over my video. I'm not sure if you could do something similar with FFXI but it's worth looking into.
