Shacknews has an update to the story about Valve “getting hacked” almost two weeks ago. I know people are trying to make this sound like it just happened but, other than this update from Shacknews, this is weeks old and your account info is safe.

According to The Steam Review, Steam itself was not accessed, but rather a Valve file server. Furthermore, the site explains that only the credit cards of Cyber Cafe subscribers were compromised. "The numbers in danger are all held by cybercafe owners, who have recurring subscriptions to their Steam games and have probably all long been informed," the posting reads. "Consumer data are only stored in enough detail to fight mass fraud, not make purchases, and weren't compromised anyway."

Don't worry, MaddoxX doesn't know what he's doing, he can't even crack steam properly to play without buying the game

You can pretty much be assured he didn't do any work, and he is just the front man to look pretty for the camera.

Well, what kicks my ass is the way 3/4 of the tech sites / gaming sites are reporting this stuff like it happened today. This happened all the way back on the 8th, but now we have a whole new wave of people panicking thinking this just happened and "oh noes!" their CC info is in jeopardy.

This is why I don't trust gaming / gadget sites for my security info (No offense to [H]).

They generally over-dramaticize / sensationalize it, and blow things out of proportion.

Not to mention the audiences on most of the sites really aren't knowledgeable on the matter and go off in a panic

I love how all the Anti-Steam folk came out of the woodwork for this fiasco.
XD

If it is real who wants to place bets on how long it takes for some jail time?

although its kind of amusing that cybercafe owners (the ones that got shafted the hardest by steam) were the ones who had their info comprimised...

although i dont agree with the way he went about it, glad somebody made noise about the steam, myself along with several million others might as well quit playing , as it takes FOREVER to get up and running just to enjoy a few hours of gaming. the only way i can connect is by dial-up. so steam realy sucks!!!!

brian, steam was never really designed with dialup users in mind. According to their hardware survey, 35,174 (about 3%) of steam users have a connection that is 56k or slower. That is out of 1,165,181 ppl that have taken their survey.

I just set up a new pc with Vista on it. For some odd reason, it takes several minutes to allow an internet connection when it's first booted up. I just play HL2 in Offline mode. Oh, and since this was a new build, it was nice to install steam and pull HL2 and Episode 1 over to it. I just make sure that out of my 2 pc's , they are never on steam at the same time. I appreciate that licensing flexibility and how easy it is to move my games around.

Problem is, NOWHERE on their product does it say that a HIGHSPEED connection is required, just an internet connection. That, simply, is false advertising, and they do nothing to rectify the situation.

Basically, they act like Microsoft: "if you don't like it, tough, buy something else, we have your money and you're not getting it back.". :(

BS. Just like with everything else, it WILL work with a slower connection. Perhaps you're not getting as good of performance as you want, but then again you're not spending the same amount as everyone else paying for high speed. Don't blame companies for you not having a highspeed connection.

Another update, it's not Steam's (Valve's) fault:

"There has been no security breach of Steam," Valve director of marketing Doug Lombardi told 1UP. "The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Cafe program. This Cyber Cafe billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com."

i ain't blaming a company for my being to cheap to get a high speed connection, i actually cant get high speed out here, not DSL, not Cable.
ya, i can play offline just fine, and once i've gotten everything loaded up i do. but on a fresh install it takes like 4 or 5 hours to get everything updated and installed.
i see the point of steam, but i realy miss just buying a game and playing it without all the B.S. of going online with a dial-up connection.

I agree. Although I have DSL, not dial-up. It's just a pain in the ass. Why can't I buy a game and not have to log on to a server to play by myself. I purchased Halflife2 and now I can't play because I forgot my Steam login info, and I cant make a new account without paying to reset my cd-key.

I had that issue with Vista too due to my mb's onboard Uli ethernet. I fixed the issue by installing a PCI network card and disabling the onboard.
