SSD Sata III backwards compatibility?

I've done some googling, and every thread I've come up with has conflicting information.

I have a newer system, and dont plan on upgrading hardware for some time, but I WAS considering getting an SSD drive here in a couple months. That's where my quandry lies.

I haven't dinked around with tech news and stuff [H] related much lately, so when I did my searching and saw that there is SATA II and III for SSD options, I started to think.

Do you go 'obsolete' and get an SATA II SSD drive, or can you run an SATA III SSD in a system that's has its storage controllers for the 3Gb/s?

I definitely dont want to swap out anything else currently but I would like to benefit from some SSD goodness. I'm assuming all these 'new drives' that are coming out are all going to be the 6Gb/s ones, right?

If so, I have to choose from what is currently available. I don't play games on my PC...pretty much the adobe suite, webdev and design stuff...so the benefit of opening larger files quickly would be sweet. Storing all my files on my NAS or other HD's is no problem either..just wondering if there is a big need to have a 120gb vs an 80gb if you're just using it for an OS/main programs drive.

thanks for your help once again!!

regular sata is 280MB\s, that is the limit. If you want more you can always get a PCI-E card, but that is going to be monstrously expensive. Really though you are talking about diminishing returns at that point. Really I would not bother worrying about it.
