Had a friend ask me a question today I couldn't answer, I told him I would ask around.
Is it worth adding a ssd just big enough to put windows 7 on if he mainly web surfs? Mainly Facebook, Twitter, email and hulu. He doesn't use many programs, avg free AntiVirus, malware bytes. Leaves his pc on all the time too.

I couldn't honestly answer it as I have no ssd knowledge at all. He was looking at 60gb ssd drives. He has maybe 3gb of music, maybe a total of 40gb of space being used. He's had the pc for a few years now, it's a store bought emachines with a core 2 duo I think 2.4ghz, 2gb of RAM and a 250gb hard drive
 
Subjective! Yes!

With the additon of the SSD drive, faster boot times and quicker swap file access can be obtained
over a standard mechanical drive.
Full AV scans will be faster on the SSD.

Your friends "actual use" does not seem to be disk intensive though.

Make the SSD the boot drive and keep the 250GB for
music and other media + backups.
 
If all you are doing is web surfing and watching Hulu and the like, then no, you won't see a dramatic improvement. It'll boot faster, and it'll do much, much better with multiple disk accesses - but it is unlikely that he is rebooting the machine enough to matter, and it doesn't sound like he does a lot of disk intensive stuff either. Pretty much like driving a Ferrari on city streets - it's faster, but not in a way you would notice. But you are going to get a lot of people telling you to get one anyway.
