Anyone short stroked something like a Momentus XT or Velociraptor? Any of you guys/girls used both a short stroked drive and SSD? How's the comparison performance?

No comparison the mechanical drive stand a chance.
Short stroking keeps the data on the faster part of the disk to reduce the performance drop off that harddrives have. So if the sequential read performance of the disk is 175MB/s (max) to 75MB/s (min) and the median is 125MB/s, when you short stroke the disk in half the data will stay on the faster half of the disk and the performance may be around 175(max)-125MB/s(min) instead.

However the latest SSD's are doing 400-500MB/s in sequential with .1ms access time and light years ahead in random read performance which is what really makes them feel fast.
