SSD making squealing sound?

In an otherwise silent system such as a laptop, has anybody else noticed an SSD making a kind of high pitched squealing sound when being accessed? Writing seems to be when it makes the most sound.

This is not just on one drive. The loudest I have heard is from Samsung PM810 drives, but I can hear others brands/models as well.
 
I'm not even sure how a drive without moving parts makes any form of squealing sound.
 
It's possible. Electricity running through components. Kinda like coil whine in a video card.

I haven't heard any but my computers are loud with many fans. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of electronic pitch

You must have dog ears, I have never heard any sound at all from an SSD

I thought the same however there are coils in the power circuitry that under some conditions may experience coil whine.

I like quiet PCs too.

Are you sure the noises come from the SSDs? Could the mobo/PSU/HBA cause it?
 
I stopped trying to make silent PCs for reasons like this. went watercooling, pump was too loud, went passive, drives were too loud. went ssd, heard graphics card. your drive could experience circuit noise for sure, not to mention the chipset or storage controller on the mobo since the speeds of ssd will work it harder than a hdd.
 
My Vertex 3 does this, I wouldn't call them squeals (I have an AX760 for that...) more like little chirps when the drive is being accessed. Fortunately I've only heard it with the door open.

I guess chirps is a better way to describe it.. the PM810 drives have a tendency to makes a very fast chirping sound so it sounds more like a squeal.. kinda like the coils on some video cards, just not as loud.

Yep, I am sure that it isn't anything else. The drives that make this noise can be put in a drive dock and it is very apparent that it is the drives themselves making the noise.
 
My CF card I use with an IDE adapter in my pfSense router does this. I ignore it, since the router is in my basement closet. Would be very annoying if it were anywhere I could hear it. Never looked into the issue, as it all works, and is away from anywhere I would be that it could disturb me.
 
My old V+100 does this. It's reminiscent of the noise a crt tv makes while powered on.
 
I had an old OCZ vertex that did this. Very similar to coil whine from a gpu. Luckily I have not heard it in anything I have had since then ssd wise. I know for sound cards or even card audio you could get a ground loop isolator, but seeing as you are in a laptop and not a sound output related problem, I am not sure how you would accomplish this. Do you get similar behavior in both battery and plugged in modes?

CRTs used to give me headaches from the sound they made. I was really happy when LCD monitors became affordable.

Yeah, it makes the same sound whether plugged in or running on battery. I can also hook up one of these drives to a desktop system with a USB 3.0 drive dock and they still make the same sounds.
 
As far as I know, it most certainly should not make that sound. I have never heard any audible sound from any SSD that I've owned.

Interesting. I just put 3 old OCZ Vertex drives in a RAID0 setup in my old PC to mess around with Windows 10 and I suddenly noticed a squealing noise coming from the PC. I figured it was probably the video card, but I hadn't noticed it previously, so I was confused why it was doing it now. Then I wondered if it might be the SSDs, but I couldn't figure out why it would be making that noise, and hadn't heard of that issue before. Just seems odd. It's pretty loud too.

Maybe we have the same problem.
