So I've been watching newegg for a while and I see they have an Intel SSD 160GB for $550. I'm wondering if that's a good price for one - or what everyone's take is on it.

Here's the information:

[$550]: Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2M160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail

The price -- from either site -- makes me believe that it's not worth the money.

If you really want one, and you could easily afford it, then more power to you.

do you really need 160 GB worth of SSD performance? I think that's the better question

I don't really need 160 GB worth of SSD performance. Just from what I see in the 80GB range is it's about $300 currently. So, the way I'm looking at it is, why not spend the extra 50% for double the space? I'm open to suggestions - mainly going to install my OS and a few more commonly played games (and eventually photoshop) onto it...

because paying 50 percent more for space you don't NEED is dumb?

80 GB is more than enough to put your OS on and a couple games, you'd get more benefit from RAIDing 2 80 GB's than having that single 160 GB from my understanding anyway

so . . . .

As far as the price goes, the cheapest I've seen the 160GB X25-M was $425 not too long ago. So, for $550, no, I don't think its a good price. :p

And as Fail mentioned, throwing 2x 80GB in RAID0 would be faster anyhow. :p $270 right now on Amazon, so $540 for two. ;)

Yea an SSD is great upgrade, its like upgrading your cpu, mobo, and ram. You will notice the difference immediately.

you can send me the 10 buck difference, that's my fee for . . . . . giving wise counsel

You have to keep in mind that you would lose TRIM by raiding.

... been working fine since summer. ;) Sold my Vertex drives to a friend, he's had 'em in RAID since Aug. Still hasn't needed to manually trim the drives.

BTW, I've had my Intel's in RAID0 for over a month now... no slowdowns.

the advantages of RAID outweigh the disadvantages of RAID anyway, almost always have

... As long as you realize that RAID is not a back-up solution, and that RAID 0 doesn't even guarantee system uptime.

If he wants to spend the money, he could do that. Maybe he wants 160GB of fast space.

he can get 160 GB of FASTER space by RAIDING 2 80 GB's and saving money too at the same time

while this is [H]ardforum, it's not [W]asteyourmoneyfornogoodreason forum

From what I've read here I've decided to go with two 80gb drives from Amazon (which are on sales right now for $250 a piece) and putting them in RAID0...

Well, I wouldn't spend the extra money to have 2 80 gig drives, especially since they can't do TRIM or even Garbage Collection when in RAID. But it's your money.
