So my current hdd is dying.(caution with a disk health thingy, and have noticed some hiccups with it). So I would like to get an ssd just for windows 7 and all its updates, this should be fast. Not sure what a good size would be, which is why I am asking,

For games and everything else I would like a regular hdd just because I need the space and don't have that much money. I would like at least 500gb for that.

I do not have sata 3 so none of that and my budget for both is around $150.

$44, WD Cavair Blue 500GB 7200RPM
or
$55, Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB 7200RPM

$95, Intel X25-V 40GB SSD
or
$135, Crucial C300 64GB SSD

40GB is enough for Windows 7, but doesn't leave you too much space. 64GB will push your budget, but gives you more leeway.

There are supposed be (but no formal announcements) a new SSD drive or two (Crucial, OCZ) coming out next week, but they likely won't be in your price range. Roll of the dice as to where current drive price will go. Probably not a lot of movement, especially at the small size end.

What I forgot to mention was that I need to install Windows XP and then use the Windows 7 upgrade. Not sure if that requires more space or not, but just wanted to mention it.

My purchase will be made on or after March 31st.

There is no upgrade path from WinXP to Win7. You would need to do a fresh install.

Fresh install of xp? That's what I would be doing, I wouldn't need to save any previous data if that's what your trying to say
