Spray painting PC components?

Hi. I was wondering if I could posibly spray my video card or my mobo with like uv spraypaint. Is there anything I should watch out for before I do this? I know you're not supposed to spray the components that give off heat. I'm talking about the actual board. And also my GPU and CPU fans. Any ideas or recommendations would be great. Thanks for the help in advance.
 
Your board does give off heat... It wouldnt be a good idea to coat any of the capacitors for instance with anything really. If you were REALLY carefull, maybe you could mask off areas you didnt want to paint and that would work. Otherwise, a VERY light misting might do the trick for the effect you want. Personally I would advise against it and of course if you go for it, make sure the thing is long since been plugged into so as to not short anything out with any conductive chemicals.
 
I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do it. I used some of that "clear" UV reactive paint on a SB Live! 5.1 and it...died. Oh well, it was only a $30 sound card anyway and I had a replacement already, I was just screwing around. Plus, it gets gummy when it warms up and will get all sticky. In no time at all you'll have a thin film of dust glued to your motherboard or other component. It comes off with alcohol, but it's a lot of work and I never could revive the sound card. I REALLY wouldn't recommend it.
 
That sounds like a dumb idea.If it was good dont you think manufactures would paint it for the "AHHHHHH" effect?It insulates heat not to mention the heating and expanding of it then drying and getting hard...No dont do it
 
I saw someone use some flourescent bic pens to draw lines on traces before. That surely wouldn't damage your card and it looks way cool under UV. It's just that it takes some mild skill. I am usually too caffinated to do anything that requires a decently steady hand.
 
Some manufacturers do "paint" the PCB and components, but it is usually a clear acrylic, the process is called "conformal coating"...

also some pcbs and components are encapsulated or potted in epoxies...

You could probably spray paint the component after it was conformally coated...
 
i wouldn't do it for all the reasons said above, i remember also seeing someone with the traces on their mobo painted and it did look really cool but i wouldn't try it unless they were junk components.

but as far as the fans go i don't see a problem as long as you take them off the components and don't spray into the bearings and such.

Thanks for the idea. What should I use to cover it though. I don't think that's plexiglass in the picture.

I'm sorry, but I honestly laughed out out when I read this. :D The answer is still no, but this time the paint-covered grease will come off whenever you rub it and will make a mess.

As far as covers go, you might be able to use some thin paperboard or contruction paper or something. You can always paint the cover, too.
 
I've seen it done before. you just have to take everything out of the case. tape up any slots and tabs (pci, agp etc) and let it cure for 24 hours.

Are you talking about the UV spray or the dielectric compound?
 
it is a bad idea to paint any of those components. It is like jumping out of a plane without a parechute and hoping you'll grow wings. It might look like a good idea now, but your goin to get screwed

Yeah, I really don't want to get screwed by building a $3000 pc then ruining it before I turn it on. :p
 
to make something similar to the picture you could use plexi, but it looks like he used the front of a clear plastic folder (you know the kind) or something similar.. The transparency looks good.
 
Just go to the local stripper supply store, get some UV reactive finger nail polish, paint the edges of the cards. I did that on a build I did for a friend of mine and it looked great... thought about doing it on a build I'm working on now but I think I'm tired of UV crap and might go a little more retro.
 
What about non-PC components?...like just general case parts and the like?...anyone had any experience with this then?...I found "ClearNeon" online....says it comes off with water...?
