spinpoint vs seagate 7200.8

How much quieter is a samsung spinpoint as opposted to a 7200.8 seagate? What about the performance? Is the performance negligible enough to merit having a spinpoint over a seagate to have a quieter hard driver?

I have a spinpoint, and a 7200.7, not the new model but... While the spinpoint is pretty much silent... the seagate is as well or a little louder. ... But IMHO the seagate 7200.8 are a better buy then the samsungs... No facts to back it up... I would just rather place my important data on a Seagate than a samsung.... After all Seagate invented the FDB motor which made todays harddrives so reliable and quiet in the first place.

If noise is the ONLY consideration in your hard drive purchase (ie a drive for a music streaming HTPC), then get the Samsung SpinPoint P80, you will not be disappointed. If performance, capacity, features, and reliability are factors, then you had best step up to Seagate, although you will have to compromise a little on noise by doing so.

Damn, I want one of these two drives but I am really sketching on if the Seagate is going to compromise the quiet factor, especially with more than one of them... I guess the only way to find out will be to try one . I am really not digging the non-native sata, and lack of the NCQ feature on the Sammy. Plus the 5 year warranty is really good looking on the Seagate.

In AnandTech's acoustics recordings, the Spinpoints have almost no seek noise, which is amazing.

And as far as capacity goes, the P120 series (out soon) should offer capacities up to 250GB.

I got a seagata sata barracuda 120gb 7200RPM and its been great can't complain about it.
