Head into your BIOS, and look for a setting that allows you to disable the onboard sound on your motherboard. If there is none, then your motherboard probably doesn't support it.

Don't worry though, when you installed the new soundcard, it should automatically disable the onboard sound. Check the Device Manager to make sure that the new soundcard is detected properly. After that, setup your speakers by following the previous posts.

Make sure that you also enable 5.1 surround sound in the Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel. Also in the soundcard's setup too.

One more thing, make sure that you have the volume turned up for the rear speakers. It is the Fader knob on the centre channel.
