speaker ''conversions'' question

ok, i have a mid 90s Sony stereo system that is real nice - i love the speakers (it has 2 rather large ones). Well, the player became stupid and is in essence broken , BUT what i want to do is convert those 2 speakers that came with it into computer speakers.

I've got a 5.1 soundblaster live soundcard, and the plugins for the speakers look like this:

is it possible for me to use those on my comp?

You're gonna have to run everything through a reciever. (Could be wrong). Just find a used stereo reciever and connect that to your PC. That's what I do and it works great.
 
Yup. You'll need to buy a receiver to hook those speakers up to and you will be in business.

Make sure the receiver you are buying is compatible with the impedance rating on the speaker or you may have problems. (IE, receiver says 8 ohms but the speakers are say 4 ohms). Good luck, it's nice to have real speakers hooked up to your computer. :);)

any suggestions on recievers? or will some generic one work well enough?

edit: each speaker has 6 impedience. that normal?

Depends on how much you wanna spend. I use a 10 year old Pioneer reciever and it works just fine.

Yeah that's normal. Most newer recievers may allow you to select the impedence. Just do a little research first.
 
searched newegg, all i found was really expensive stuff (for my budget atleast)

anybody have a spare for sale?
 
Visit garage sales, thrift shops, etc. or look in the classifieds section of your newspaper.
 
You can always look on ebay and search for some yamaha or pioneer receivers. These can be had for generally a little over 100$... since the market is oversaturated with receivers for sale. I was going to sell my 2 year old Yamaha receiver on ebay (I bought it for 299), and I changed my mind and didnt sell it since ebay was only selling it for about $139. :eek:

I would personally go with the Pioneer receiver. It's cheaper and comes in box (pretty much brand new). It should serve you many many years of enjoyment.
