sow whats with the 2 differnt socket types?

Socket 478 was what the previous generation of p4s used.

Socket 775 is the new style

Unless you already have a cpu, id buy Socket 775, little more future proof.

Yeah, the socket is called mPGA479M. But the FC-PGA (socketed) P-M CPU only has 478 pins. One pin in the socket is unused. I believe Intel did that to ease the transition from P4-M to P-M since a 479 socket has the hole for the keyed pin on both types of processors (universal). IOW, a manufacturer only had to buy 479 mPGA sockets for both types of processors.

The P-M also comes in a 479 pin FC-BGA (ball grid), which doesn't use a socket. The FC-BGA processors are soldered onto the motherboard.
