Soundproof Harddrives

Hey guys I remembered reading somwhere about some guy putting some kind of foam around his harddrives to quiet htem down and was wondering if there was a how 2 around here cause i am headed out to home depot tommorow i have a 3 hd's in my server and they are getting pretty loud these days:)

Ordinary styrofoam will do it, though some dedicated acoustic stuff would probably work better. Just pack the drives in foam. The silencing part is easy. The hard part is cooling the things when they're wrapped in nice insulating sound dampening material with no air flow. Other than watercooling I can't think of anything that'd work all that well.

Another option is to just get some rubber isolation mounts for the drives. That'll at least reduce the intensity of the vibrations transferred from the drives to the case.

As long as I'm at it I might as well toss out another disk silencing tactic- go fibre channel. It won't actually make the drives silent, but with the cable lengths it allow you can just put the disks elsewhere. That doesn't help me much, but if you're living in a house you could always put the disks in the utility room next to the washing machine. If you're worried about "water problems", just bolt the drives to the ceiling. Controllers and disks are generally fairly reasonably priced on eBay.
 
Yeah, I remember seeing the thread in question, and they definitly watercooled the drives.
My suggestion would be to put the server in the closet :p
 
CompactFlash. No noise at all. Actually, SD cards are better; the read/write speeds are much higher. Get a raid of those for a boot disk, and NAS for everything else. Passive heatsink. Passive psu. And there's your silent computer. :D

 
I would point out that while sound waves can bounce (if the arent absorbed)
they wont bend

whereas air will flow around a baffle

you have to provide current
styrofoam is great at generating a static buildup from friction and then discharging with a ground contact
(Styrofoam is an insulator; it will hold its charge until it is discharged by current leaking into the air or along a moisture film on the surface of the Styrofoam)

1. ground it to start with (the surface)
2. dont rub it :p
3. coat it with something highly conductive, like foil and ground that
