I was going to line the front of my case intake grill with blue leds, about 5 or 6 on each side that flicker or flash to whatever sound is being pumped to the front left and right channels of the soundcard. Left leds for left channel right leds for right channel.

I know you can't just split the jack and power the leds that way, not enough power. I need a way to make it so I have almost a 0% chance of screwing up my sound card and soldering to the board is not an option. I do my soldering over the stove.

If I could, I'd like to have a switch mounted somewhere(probably in the usb panel) that switches between steady, flashing and sound activated.

Look into the lm3916 dot/bar driver chip. If you have trouble finding information about the lm3916 then look for the lm3914. The lm3916 is just a lm3914 with a logarithmic scale. It is commonly used for making VU meter style displays. You will need one for each channel as well as various other support components(nothing major).
