Sony Working On PS3 "Elite" Model?

I stopped reading right there. Yeah it happens in business, but you can reap more rewards coming up with fresh ideas yourself.

Thats your own fault if you wish to have a shallow viewpoint instead of researching.

More rewards are not always more rewards when your R&D expenses are dramatically more. Sometimes it's more profitable to reap what the others did not sow vs becoming the new protoge in technology.

There is nothing wrong with using existing technology out there to enhance your console. Let me ask you, if they didn't put the gyroscope in there, would you be happy then? Would you buy a console then? Or would you simply find something else to bash? like perhaps the Blueray?

I stated refreshing ideas of existing technology in my post. The sony controller went though several revisions, the "boomerang" among other designs, only the last one had motion sensing which was announced after the wiimote. Did nintendo invent the accelorometer, no. But they did use it for the first time in a Mainstream console controller (meaning motion sensing out of the box)

How many of you were up for Sony's banana controller when they made a "refreshing" idea? Not many. Sony learned from the marketing of that and the perception to go back to what they know best, the PS2 controller. Nothing wrong with going with what the crowd wants.

And if sony hasn't announced it, not like i care anyway, well, nevermind it doesn't really matter.
But yet you are quick to bash them?

To add to my reasoning, why isn't anyone upset at Microsoft for releasing a black console to copy the Wii since they announced they will also make thiers in black? Why isn't anyone telling Nintendo that they are copying Sony for the reason that the PS3 was black first?

But wait, if the PS3 was to come in a white version, everyone would be up in arms.

I would like the ps3 to have color options, i think that would be cool, i mean, now many colors does the ds come in? Color is just the look it in no way affects the function of the machine. But i like colors, they are pretty, lol

Ockie, while I can identify with you (alot of people on the web, in forums in particular, take the Sony hating to a ridiculous, immature level...and this is from somebody who will refuse to buy any Sony products) most of your examples are thoroughly different from what Sony has been doing. Nintendo moving to optical media, mainly, is nowhere near the same as the plagiarism of the Sixaxis. Why? Because Nintendo had no choice but to abandon cartridges. They just don't hold enough space, and I'm pretty sure they're much costlier to manufacture. Nintendo's move to optical media was necessary, just because Sony was the first company (still in the game) to release a system with optical media doesn't mean Nintendo was copying that functionality by incorporating it into later systems...it was a necessity. Sony's move to a "gyroscopic" controller, on the other hand, was not necessary, and was plagiarism because it directly contradicted most of the statements they had been making about their control mechanism before the Wii was unveiled. I even seem to recall somebody asking the Warhawk developers how they planned on using the controller in the game, and their response was something to the effect of, "Uhh..we just heard about this last week." Of course, they later revised that statement to something along the lines of, "Ohh, you totally misinterpreted us, dude. We've known about it for years...we just only received an actual controller last week." Riiight.

Let's try to get back to Sony possibly working on a higher-calibur Playstation.

I don't think it would be possible, too many people here are focused on burning Sony to the ground like a bunch of Anarchists nearby a McDonald's at a G8 summit.

Well lets face it, the gyro abilities are in the next generation consoles, it's basically going to become part of the console competition. So technically, it wasn't an unwise decision to jump onto the bandwagon.

Perhaps you can get the argument of the optical disk, but what about online content? Online connection? Wireless controllers? Downloadable content such as games? Online credits? Those are all unnecessary but eventually it becomes part of the evolutionary change in consoles.

I'm not saying they ripped off the design or not, because quite frankly, we wont know untill we see some actual RD charts. Nintendo isn't providing those for us either so that only makes our findings harder. But what I am saying is that it's not always a copying process in the sense of trying to rip off ideas, but rather a business move and rather a move of the evolutionary process.

No, you're too focused on being right.

It's all speculation at this point anyway, so let's speculate too, instead of fight about who stole what and announced what before whom.

What exactly am i researching?

No there isn't, thats exactly what Nintento did, they used existing technology in a refreshing idea.

Oh, and whats wrong with BluRay?

How many of you were up for Sony's banana controller when they made a "refreshing" idea? Not many. Sony learned from the marketing of that and the perception to go back to what they know best, the PS2 controller. Nothing wrong with going with what the crowd wants.

The banana controller was interesting, i would have to use it to know for sure but it may have had potential,

But yet you are quick to bash them?
[/quote]

Well lets see, they were quick to bash my country calling us cheap people because we don't want to blow $600 or whatever on a game console. I'm not bashin, i'm saying that i don't understand why they want to put out an Elite version when they think the US is to cheap to buy the current version.

No, you're too focused on being right.

I'm not focused on being right. I'm focused on people having to appreciate both consoles for what they have brought forward and rather embrace both technologies and push the industry further. Destroying Sony in the process does nothing for us, it leaves us between the Wii and the X360, which doesn't give the 3rd dog the opportunity to run with the bone as there is none.

Instead of people bashing and being so negative, why not look forward to a new product? Whats wrong with staying positive about both consoles? I enjoy both of them and I like both of them, they each have their downs and they each have their ups.... one is not worlds better than the other as they cater to diffrent ideas.

You know, I think I just figured out how people always blame the [H] for "negative" PS3 news...

This article is not negative, was never meant to be negative nor was anything negative ever implied....

BUT...simply because the reaction in this thread to the announcement hasn't been favorable, this will be deemed another "negative" PS3 post.

Odd...isn't it?

Maybe it's your headlines. "Elite" :p if you look at the FCC filing you'll see the two are electrically identical except for the HDD capacity. Not really elite so to speak. Could be they're unofficially killing off the 20GB SKU, dropping the price slightly on the 60GB and introducing this one. Or any number of scenarios. But it's not elite in the sense of the XBOX 360 since there will be no other additions

Must they copy everything from the other companies. Seriously, Sony stole the sixaxis because Nintendo made the Wiimote and now they are stealing design from another company. Classic.
IIRC Sony had submitted their patent for motion control technology before Nintendo.

If the only difference in the 60gb unit the 80gb unit is the drive, maybe they did this because there was no price difference. Especially considering that 80gb laptop sata drives are more widely manufactured.

Oh what was I thinking, I meant to say that Sony rapes children.

60GB, Wireless, and memory card reader are the differences between the 20 & 60..

Don't shoot the messenger...shoot the forum members who squabble and bicker over the message? Eh, I've had a good run.

Sony technically had an idea similar to this years ago if I remember, where they created a SKU for the PS2 that included a hard drive and WiFi or some other pretty unnecessary hardware additions to the PS2. It was called the PS2 Home or PS2 Ultimate or something like that, and I'm pretty sure it was released in Japan but decided against releasing it in the US. So yes, Sony came up with the idea of bloating their hardware to make an extra buck off of the hardcore first, but if they're going to do it again, couldn't they make the specs slightly more...ahem...impressive? If you're already paying $600 for a 60GB drive, why is an 80GB worth $200 (or however much) more?
.
Yup it was pretty neat. It was called the PSX and it was a DVR witha 160GB/250GB HDD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(DVR)
Also note how the PSX was the first to utlilized the XMB.

Didn't see anyone reference this - but if you read yesterday's Washington Post article -

Executives at Sony, whose $600 high-end PS3 has racked up fewer sales than the Xbox 360 and Wii, said Microsoft's new console does not seem to address any consumer need.

"We're scratching our heads. They're fragmenting their product offering and fragmenting their consumer base," said Peter Dille, a Sony Computer Entertainment America senior vice president of marketing, who said Sony has no current plans to increase the size of its 60 gigabyte hard drive.

Contradict much?

Probably because its Kotaku...or however they spell their name.

I take little of what they say seriously now. They have an obvious bias against Sony and it showed with their quick report on the UK launch failure, in which they later had to retract after it obviously was not.

I wouldnt call an 80gb model a copy of the "elite" anyway.

Either way at least we can still buy a 120gb sata for less than the "Elite's 180 dollar 120 gb drive.

What "exactly" are they "stealing" now, and what exactly did they steal back then. Don't think for a second mounting a gyroscope into a device for a console was a new thing invented by Nintendo...

Show me the prior six-axis controller with a design like the wiiMote.

Many companies have stolen designs from each other. THey are all guilty of it, honestly.
The difference? The xbox360 doesn't suck. and the Wii is affordable [if you can ever find one]

Actually, the xbox was black, so, microsoft could say they are "going back to their roots"

Show me the prior six-axis controller with a design like the wiiMote.

When did he say the six-axis controller was designed like the Wiimote? He was saying the internals (gyroscopes) aren't a new thing that Nintendo or Sony invented...How did you get that out of that statement?

So you honestly can sit there and believe that this does not happen in the business world. Why would anyone sit there when their competition is soaking up the rewards?

Also, perhaps you want to analyzes the current situation here, not just Sony.

Microsoft created the Xbox, after the Sony console and the Nintendo console at the time, meaning they copied by entering that same market, they also used controllers (copied), also used very similar design cues.

Microsoft used wireless controller pads with wireless alternative interfaces on their Xbox360, then Nintendo came along with their WII and COPIED that! Imagine that! Also, they gave their Wii a optical drive... COPIERS!

Now Sony came along, COPIED a "FUNCTION" of a remote, not the entire design, there are huge leaps and bounds differences between the two. And yet, everyone is so upset about it! Go figure. Nintendo had the powerglove years ago and it died as fast as it came, so now people are upset because other console companies are making use of that technology? Wake up world, it's part of the corporate world... its' called product evolution.

If the idea was so unique and so attributed to their design, don't you think they would have a case against Sony? Perhaps. Similar into how hummer ended up settling on their H2 front grille representing the Jeep grill. It was eventually ruled in that it doesn't hold a unique resemblance and it's a part of the product evolution.

Heck, if you go to Chrysler's design center right now, you will see a slew of the latest Toyota/Lexus, BMW, Honda/Acura, etc cars there in pieces... thats how they get design cues. Yet you never hear anyone bitching about it.

I hate how people seem to bash Sony and accuse them of copying other companies when their favorite company (Nintendo) did the same with using a wireless controller, remote interface, optical reader, network connectivity, online play, and many other design elements.

Lets face it, competitors copies compeditors... simple as that, part of the life cycle.

And this is coming from a guy who owns a wii.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Nintendo actually had the first 1st party Wireless controller aka "The Wavebird" whereas Sony and Microsoft didn't officially license wireless controllers?

Must they copy everything from the other companies. Seriously, Sony stole the sixaxis because Nintendo made the Wiimote and now they are stealing design from another company. Classic.
????
PS3 launches with HDMI and larger HDD, MS then comes out with the Elite. Who copied who? Really nobody copied anything, but are just trying to be competitive.

Theory:
Sony drops core SKU and it is replaced by 60GB @$499 and 80GB @$549 or $599.

As far as Sony saying the core will not be discontinued. Didn't MS say the HDMI prototype was only a test bed and not going in to production anytime in the foreseeable future?

They talked of a model with more Cell processors maybe it will fold twice as fast!;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Nintendo actually had the first 1st party Wireless controller aka "The Wavebird" whereas Sony and Microsoft didn't officially license wireless controllers?

Wasn't part of the console, it was an optional accessory, and ton of vendors were offering under thier name tags. So they were not the first.

????

Yep. A lot of companies says a lot of things, this is either to hype their product (free marketing, to fool compeditors, to test the public opinion, or simply to keep people guessing.
