Company blames lagging sales. Turns out people don’t want to pay $2,500 for an 11” screen...While it appears that sluggish sales and a fairly lacking product were the main reasons behind the halt, Sony puts a bit more of a positive spin on it....they were ahead of their time, they say. OLED is still a few years off; LED backlighting and 3D Televisions are the near future...

Heh, what did they expect? Of course nobody wants to pay that much money for such a small screen. People are too used to 27" monitors and humongous TV screens to ever be able to come down to something that low - in order for OLED to become competitive and mainstream they'd need to offer it at same prices as LCD monitors and in same sizes. I just hope they don't crash Laser TV down like this as well - that seems much more interesting to me anyhow, as I'm not a huge fan of fixed-pixel display technology, which is why I'm already disappointed in SED by advance.

LED backlighting means nothing, putting a few diodes on a whole screen doesn't give it any better contrast, if they can make each pixel have it's own diode then maybe, just maybe the technology will achieve some decent black levels. 250 something local dimming zones doesn't fool anyone.

P.S. What about the LaserVue? Nobody seems to even mention it. There's a Laser TV out on the market and nobody has done a decent review of it? Come on. I think that has the potential to be the best display technology so far. Imagine a 30" Laser Monitor. I'd pay a bucketload for that right now.

I can't believe they gave up on this so soon...the reason that sales were 'sluggish' was because the price was so high...once the prices dropped they would sell like crazy...what the hell are they thinking?...there has to be more to this...Sony probably just wanted to focus on the gimmicky 3-D TV fad

The thing that bugs me the most is that we already have the technology to make several orders of magnitude better displays with various tech which is either being held back by production cost, patenting issues, or simply the desire of the display market to milk LCD to the last drop until they're ready to let it pass on like the CRT. When they finally do mass-produce new displays, people will be looking back at LCD's sitting in the loft and thinking "God, how did I ever think THAT looked good". The LCD era will not be one people will fondly remember, that's for sure.

I remember when OLEDs were just a wikipedia article.
I'm sad to see them give up so soon. =[.

Going to stock up on a few 4:3 CRT's and keep hunting for an FW900, I see it's becoming a neccessity.
Just how incadescent bulbs are being replaced with "power-saving" ones which emit a nasty kind of light and hurt my eyes even more than looking at this LCD (which I just now can see it's whites are yellow no matter what I do to the color temperature). It seems all good things are being pushed out and there's no decent replacement on the horizon. At least we can still use halogen bulbs, but what about displays? :S

Yep, that's what I meant, the European Union won't allow them to be sold / used in homes anymore. We're not part of the EU yet, but the worst laws spread the fastest. I didn't think they'd actually go through with this, especially now that it should be public knowledge that the population-induced global warming is a hoax.
