Sony is once again being sued. The new lawsuit alleges that Sony infringed on a synchronized parallel processor patent held by Parallel Processing Corporation of Newport Beach.

The terse five-page complaint--filed in the Eastern District of Texas (Tyler Division)on July 26--claims that Sony products including the PS3 infringe upon its patent. The suit doesn't specify which of the patent's claims Sony is infringing upon, but it states that the company's actions "are causing irreparable harm and monetary damage" to the company.

I like the line just after what steve quoted.

Parallel Processing Corporation is seeking damages and attorney's fees with interest, as well as the impounding and destruction of all Sony products that infringe on the patent.

They want them to gather up ever single PS3 and destroy them? I would like to see them do that.

Yeh, like they are even going to be able to recall all the PS3's

HAHA, these nut jobs has a thing coming for them... and it's not in the form of broken PS3's.

Last thing is somone who paid a high dollar for a console giving that up.

Wait.. I didn't know Sony made the processors... and why didn't they sue before it even came out, they had to have known. Yet another case where they wait until they think they can get a juicy enough settlement before "protecting" their patent.

"synchronized parallel processing with shared memory"

That sounds pretty vague to me... So that pretty much.. anything with more than 1 CPU? Sounds like yet another efficiency patent.

PPC is a patent troll. Why are they only targeting Sony and not IBM or Toshiba? And why are they filing in area of Texas known to be sympathetic toward patent trolls? Ah yes, this is just another patent troll seeking a quick pay day from a company that they believe they can threaten into settling. I hope Sony fights back.

Wouldn't it have to cover anything with more than one core in a single system?

Should've sued Sony before they lost a couple hundred on each PS3 and they had more money. Shows how dumb these guys are. :D

Anyone with a core 2 duo and integrated graphics has been infringing on this patent from day one. Basically if you applied it to the real world and not the fantasy world, this would mean that every multi core processing system that used memory at all would be subject to destruction.

Wasn't Cray using that kind of technology before these dweebs even patented it? It was the next logical step for microprocessing.. shouldn't be able to patent that kind of stuff anyway. It can potentially destroy innovation rather than preserving it.

You can't patent obvious inventions. But look who decides what's obvious, government employees at the patent office.

Lessee if I've got this right...
Sycronized parallel processing: a chip or multiple chips performing multiple processes or calculations at the same time
with shared memory: said chip(s) using only a single point memory source to support these processes

wtf?! doesn't EVERY processor do that by definition?
Let's hope the judge gets this right off the bat. East Texas has enough to be ashamed about already. ^_^

Patent trolls for teh FAIL.
