Imagine the gadgets / products that could be made from this paper-thin bendable display. Full color displays that are only 0.01 inch thick? I’d wallpaper my office in this stuff.

Sony Corp. released video of the new 2.5-inch display Friday. In it, a hand squeezes a display that is 0.3 millimeters, or 0.01 inch, thick. Although flat-panel TVs are getting slimmer, a display that's so thin it bends in a human hand marks a breakthrough.

I see this being used for the old sci-fi TV wristwatch thingys, not for a full size home theater set. It would be FAR too expensive to implement on a large scale. Even if they were up to getting the tech into a decent home size, it's probably many years before the tech gets cheap enough to be feasible for widespread use... Pretty cool idea though.

Ehh, Nintendo did it six months ago, sony ripped them off with an inferior product! ;)

Ok, now that I started the fanboy war, this is pretty amazing stuff. They say they have not actually thought of actual uses for the product, but I bet that they do, they just won't tip their hand just yet.

I'm so sick of seeing these things. I've seen some form of this for years now, always promising to be in some actual product "soon". Never seems to happen.

I don't want to see anymore "ooo look what we did in the lab with millions of dollars". I want a product using it or tech like it, that I can buy TODAY!!!

Who's with me? :)

not me. stop surfing these sites and go stand in front of Best Buy then. ;) :D

they must go through this stage to get to where you want it. im happy with it, its really cool

They have to become vaporware for you to want it?
To some extent I'm with Charpman. Yah its cool to see all this stuff they did in a lab with a crap load of money, but what good is it if we never see it come to market, or it won't come to market for another 10+ years. When I see something like this

Sony said it has yet to decide on commercial products using the technology

It makes me wonder then why even bother trying to make it. Just because then you can say that you did and then sue anyone else that actually was working on something like this for an actual real purpose?

Had they actually had something in mind that they were working on to have released soon then it would be one thing, but when it comes to useless R&D for no real purpose other than R&D then I have to agree after awhile I get kinda sick of seeing all these things that get thought up and seem really cool but never make it to the market as they were just playing around to see if they could do it, not to actually sell it.

If you only make shit with a commercial purpose in mind, 8 out of 10 things invented would have never been invented. Sometimes R&D is just that, seeing if you can do something and then figuring out if there is a commercial application. That's how all big R&D shops operate. Something like this you know for sure will have a commercial application. It's just the statement about the current pace of tech. Currently having no commercial application in mind is not the same as never going to have a commercial application.

I guess that is true, but I still would like to see a little more of this stuff actually make it to market in one form or another. It seems like some company is always talking about some new gizmo or software they made, howeve it will never be available. Like the 3d air mouse. Looks cool, but probably won't ever make it to the market. It seems like every other day some company is showwing off some new R&D toy they made but have not plans to do anything with. Kinda like all those concept cars.

I think it's a function of, is it useful? If these guys spend all their money on 100 new inventions, and 10 stick, well that's great for us. We get to use the 10 that stick. And it will normally only stick if it is useful or profitable (go hand in hand sort of). Most crap you see, such as this 3d air mouse I never heard of, might never make it to market, but the technology and process now exists. It is quite possible a newer inventor might see something in that 3d air mouse, might just a slight redesign, or just one concept from the invention, to respawn it in a more useful manner.

To put it simply, it's throwing shit on the wall and seeing what sticks :p

Cool. I like the wallpaper idea. :)

I would go for a doormat that i could customize, that would be to much fun.

Just to change something from "welcome (with puppy dogs)" to Get the F off my door mat would be fun.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think it's great. But I also thought it was great every time someone else did this same thing or something similar for flexible/folding/ultra thin displays for the past 4 years or more. I just want the next step already. Other companies have been promising rollable super thin OLED displays since before the turn of the century. It's always "just around the corner"...turning out to be one hell of a big corner.

I just want my dream PDA/Cell phone already, and it NEEDS some for of this tech! I'm tired of waiting. :)

At this point in the 'game' I'm less concerned with which type of tech makes it, just gimmie gimmie gimmie already. Stop with the tease, lets get on with it! :)

mmmm.....
super-thin display coupled with super-thin flexible batteries=crazy new era of portable computing.

this is not really new... flexable OLED displays have been demoed a few times over the past few years...

they just need to make them last longer, OLED half-lifes are still too short to really be a viable product imho
