Something to think about

Occasionally, it good to remember why we do this.

It was very kind of him to take the time to mention the DC team during this difficult time.

Last night, pancreatic cancer finally got my dad. Thankfully, he died in his sleep because his heart stopped. This happened five weeks after diagnosis. At diagnosis, they found a tumor on his pancreas, metastasis on the liver and some nodules on the lung. He was only able to get one chemo treatment which after two days showed statistical signs that it was working, tumor markers went down but clinically, he kept deteriorating. He developed ascites because of the size of the tumors and he became immobile. Because his platelet count never rebounded above 100,000, he couldn't get another chemo infusion. The cancer spread to his lymph nodes, bone, brain and his kidneys started to fail. We put him in a private room on thursday night and he was on 3mg of morphine and hour. Because of the fluid buildup, the ascites, it was compressing his lungs and he had to be on full O2 and even with that his blood oxygen was hovering at 80-85. Last night, it went down to 60 and he died.

He was only 51 years old. My mom and I are starting a fund in his name to fund our doctor, Dr Fine because he does the most cutting edge research for pancreatic cancer and I never want someone else to have to suffer through this terrible disease. To you folders, keep folding.

51...that's just way too young.

I know my thoughts will be with this family tonight as will many others here.

The competition is fun and all, but I fold for only one reason.... and we all know what that is.

My thoughts will be with the quoted poster, and best wishes during these tough times. And I will never stop folding.....I might not donate as much as some others, but I will continue to do my part until a cure is found.

Breast cancer got my uncle's sister 4 years ago she was in her late 40's. She didn't even get to see all of her kids graduate from high school.

My thoughts are with the original poster's family as well.

Please pass on my personal and the OCAU team's condolences to this young man. I lost my father in a car accident when I was a month short of my tenth birthday, so I know a little of what his is going through. My father died at age 37.

We all know somebody that has been affected by cancer, by Alzheimers or by Parkinsons. That should be enough to get everyone contributing to this critically important project.

While we may not solve cancer ourselves by running this project, hopefully we will generate the information and knowledge for a very clever Biomedical Researcher to have a Eureka! moment in the near future.

As much as we love you guys, and as much as we hate you guys, this is the real reason why we stand side by side and united as one, and pour our hearts, wallets and souls into the F@H project.

That is, to stop sad occurrences like this one from ever happening.

The competitions, the races, hell - EVEN THE DUCK DOES NOT MATTER.

Finding a cure DOES.

Fold on whatever you can for whoever you can, spread the word, get others involved.

I started folding when my 20 month old nephew was diagnosed (he looks like he will pull through fully). As noted the competition is fun, but not why we do it.

That's why I keep my PS3 folding even though the PPD sucks

It's sad to hear this. I was also affliged before by the sudden death of my grandmother from liver cancer. She was diagnosted with liver cancer just close to 5 weeks before death and she lost 120 pounds. It's not a pretty sight but she said to me before dying that we should live on and pray that this cursed disease will disappear from the earth before it hit another family member.

It's with this words that I'm folding as hard as I can, above competition and above rivalry because we are working toward the same cause no matter our allegiance

I wanted to say to the unknown poster that my heart is with him and his family and we are working hard to push everyone toward a cure by any means.

Things like this really remind you that ppd aren't what really matter, but the end result, a cure, does. Thank you.

my condolences.

i never forget why i fold, their names and memories always close. i come no where near most of you in terms of point and CPU power, but i have to do something so i do, and that is another wonderful aspect of folding...its about people and finding cures.
