Something curious about display angles

I notice on my BenQ FP931 19" monitor the monitor goes dark when you get to extreme angles to either side 90 degrees while sitting. However, the brightness is generally the same if, while at extreme angles you are standing up.

So generally speaking a person standing to the side of you will see a brighter image than a person sitting next to you.

Just curious, any explanations?
 
The vertical and horizontal viewing angles vary between different panels. It's caused by the arrangement of the liquid crystals.
