my neighbor was trying to take his heatsink off of his CPU to clean the dust out of it. I put Artic Silver Ceramique on it like your supposed to. well the computer started running 200 degrees so i put alot on it and it actually ran normally with alot on it. We anyways he was trying to take the heatsink off and it ripped the CPU out of the socket. The CPU is ruined cause of the many bent pins and the fact that some broke while trying to straighten. Im just wondering if the board is fine. It wasnt plugged in when this happened. So is the locking part of the Zif socket messed up? If i buy another P4 will it work just fine? He went and bought a dell and he will crackhead it to me. Its a Intel D875 motherboard and the cpu was a S478 Pentium 4 3.0E GHz.Just would like to know if its going to work if i spend the money on a new CPU. Thanks

It should be fine. I've ripped a CPU out of the socket while trying to remove a HSF before and both the CPU and the motherboard still worked fine. Also, you shouldn't use a lot of thermal grease. Just use enough to cover the surface area with a very thin coating.

the CPU had a bunch of bent pins, my neighbor broke some while trying to straighten them out. I used alot of thermal paste because i put on the amount that artic silver suggests about a dime sized drop on the cpu. well the CPU would run at 200 degrees F on idle. This is on the OEM HSF. So i just kept putting the artic silver to it untill the temps dropped back to normal. it took alot but it ran just fine with alot for some strange reason.

Edit: thanks alot for your reply. I greatly appreciate it man.
