freakeshly tested and redundancy to make sure every calculation is flawless. one value being off wont effect a video game. one value being off would be disasterous for jet engine tolerances.

and the prices may be circa 2000.

they arent designed to previde nearly perfect graphical accuracy fast and efficient. they are designed for mathematical perfection without any bitflips.

they also are for more expensive systems that run on older tech.
 
So they're only good for mission critical calculations. Do you know if they'd be slower than a Quadro/Xeon workstation for DCC thats not mission critical?
 
It's not an apples to apples comparison. That's like trying to compare an Itanium processor to a Pentium 4. If you just read the Mhz rating you'll choose the P4 every time. Just take it on faith that workstation/server hardware is built for a specific type of task, and that hardware can perform those tasks better than a good ol' general purpose PC. IBM is second to none in chip design and production technology. No matter how good it is, I don't want to fly on a jumbo jet designed on a system running Windows XP with a P4EE and a 6800Ultra.
 
Yeah I figured they were for specific apps since they only run Unix. I know MHz means nothing, but equivalently speaking, what would that 1.5GHz 64bit Power with the PCI graphics card do if it were able to run a 32bit app?
