some silly questions - input needed

okay so heres what i wanna do. i have some lexan laying around and was getting a few silly ideas. i want to take the tops off my hd's and put lexan on the top so you can see inside of it.. anything i need to look out for? is it dangerous? like anything inside get damaged by light?

also, i wanted to take the internals out of my psu, and make the same size psu case out of lexan, but what do, or would i use to adhere the pieces together? i used superglue on a small 'prototype' but it made it all cloudy.. i could really use some help.. thanks

um yeah what he said, please for the love of god people USE THE F'ING SEARCH!!!!!!!!! You dont even have to use the search on this forum, put it in google (or aol or msn since i bet you have one of those) There are thousands of mods of these exact things out there.

Now if you want my serious opionin, if you do not know if they will hurt it dont do it. I have seen seasoned modders destroy hard drives. Me personaly would never touch my 160 or 120s. Why dont you start with some easy stuff first. You got to crawl before you walk man.

I haven't done this mod myself for a few reasons.
First, I've read the guides on how to do it, and it's way to risky unless you want to throw away a perfectly good drive.
Second, the suggestions for keeping the internals of your formerly sealed drive "clean" are really half-assed solutions.
Third, I no longer have access to a cleanroom - see second reason.

If by chance you DO have access to a cleanroom, know what the hell you're doing, and
don't mind flushing money down the toilet, then GO FOR IT! :p

thats funny, ive never heard of 1 person screwing up a harddrive by this. if you can link me to someone whose messed it up (even though its been done by lots of people) id appreciate it.

no ones gonna write a guide about how they screwed up their harddrive... well, its possible to write it but if it were me, and i screwed up a harddrive, i rather not tell anyone about it

but yea, if theres a link to something like that, id appreciate it too

ive heard of people getting a clean room by going to the bathroom, turning on the showers hot water for a couple minutes til steam is everywhere, then come back and lock the door... that way the steam gets to the dust in the air and sorta like pulls it down so its not floating around
 
I'm gonna give it a shot with a 9GB drive I got from my brother. My dad works in a cleanroom and can get me in there, so I think I've got a bit of an advantage. I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot after I've gotten a little farther on my current project and I bother to look for some really thin plexi.

But yeah, really, before I signed up here, I lurked for probably 6 months, and spent a long time reading tutorials on hundreds of websites about all kinds of shit. It's not difficult to look for info, and then ask when you can't find an answer to a specific question.

But then there's moisture everywhere.

I'd say go for it. From my experience, at least Western Digital's clean rooms aren't that clean. I opened up a dead HD to find a thin nylon string. Now it's got a piece of plexi on it and sits on my desk.
 
So far, everyone that has done this mod has expirienced a drive failure usually within minutes of powering up. I think the longest running I have read about was a week. My advice for those who want to do this mod, use an old drive that you wont even plug in and install some lights under the plexi for a nice effect.

wrong... do a lil bit of research on guides and you'll find people who've done the mods and had the harddrives last a loong long time... so not everyone has a drive failure
