Some questions about RAID

I don't know much about RAID besides the basics, but I was wondering if it would be possible to take my 4-5 drives all Seagate but different sizes and models (200gb, 320gb, 500gb, etc) and set them up to appear as one drive the size of all of them combined?

Would this speed/slow the read/write process of the drives?

Since it is multiple drives, when you copy/paste a large file and then another, how is the process handled compared to a single drive? (seems on single drives it does one file then the other and usually takes a while)

Could I easily add more drives in the future?

Would I have to format all the drives to set it up or when I add a new drive?

If a drive stopped working, what would happen?

Yeah, that looks nice.. but what about the safety of my files? Is it like RAID 0? These are my main storage drives for all my content on my computer like music, etc and really do value them as far as data loss, etc..

It's just spanning/JBOD so it's technically not RAID at all. If a drive fails, you'll lose whatever was on that drive, and any files that were split between that drive and another would be corrupted.

It's really better to just run the drives separately.
