Some questions about heatsinks.....

Ok guys I have some questions about heatsinks with Intel processors.

First, I know that with AMD, if you install a aftermarket heatsink and thermal paste it will void your warranty. Is this the same with Intel, or will Intel allow you to install aftermarket heatsinks and thermal paste?

Second, I am thinking about getting a Core 2 Duo. Will a Zalman 9500 LED work with these processors? Because I have seen on the Zalman website that it says nothing about Core 2 Duo support BUT it has Socket LGA 775 support. Should I be fine?

Third, if I do get the Zalman heatsink and a Core 2 Duo processor, do I need to support it in any way like with stuff connected to the top of my case? Or will it hold by itself?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help.

If you post something like respond ASAP you will probably get less response, just be patient, it's a forum. If you need info NOW just use google.

If the zalman works with LGA775, that's what conroe is so I don't see why it wouldn't work. No you will not need any braces to support the heatsink.

Don't know anything about the warranty.

a quick google's first resutl was that yes, both amd and intel have the same warranty policy regarding 3rd party heatsinks. And for the third question the hsfg is supported by the socket hold down mechanism, no external mounting to the case would be required.

But IIRC isn't there virtually no way to tell you used an aftermarket HS/F if you send the proc in?

That is what I was thinking. How would they know?

They won't know. As long as you don't de-lid, modify, bend pins, burn or destroy it... You'll be fine. I can see the day where there's an internal register that keeps track of your highest rated clock speed... however :S.

The moral police will probably come by at some point, so I'll put it out there that TECHNICALLY any overclocking voids the warranty too, so if you bork it, technically you should eat the cost...but then again, if you are attaching an aftermarket heatsink, you will probably overclock it, and will very unlikely kill it in the 3(?) year period it is warranted for. If you buy just the chip (oem), I believe it is warranted for 90 days only anyway.

But I only want the heatsink because of its looks and cooling capability. I probably won't overclock because I don't have the slightest clue on how to, and also I really see no need to possibly damage my cpu just for a few fps and 3dmarks.

But you are saying if I just put the cpu in the socket, put the thermal paste on and heatsink on, and not damage anything I will be fine? If I do need to rma it, and I did not overclock or damage it, I should be fine correct?
