The title pretty much says it all. I can't have loud speakers in the dorm/at home, so I've gotten used to headsets. I play games.... entirely too much, and typically listen to music/watch videos on most days.

Thus far, I've owned three sets of Plantronics Audio.90s (two of which were purchased when they were still Plantronics HS-1s). Looking back, the headphones felt a little small and the headsets themselves just couldn't stand up to the random accidental abuse I put them through (i.e. occasionally tripping on cord, or knocking them off a desk.. goofy stuff). I've also tried Altec Lansing AHS-501 and now 601s.. which, to me at least, seem like identical headsets with the exception of the 601s bulky and annoying SRS mixer on the cord. Both of these seemed fine to me, but it wouldn't hurt to have just a smidgen more quality.. However, if I can, I'd like to avoid purchasing another pair of these until I've given a "higher quality" headset a try. Even if I went back, I'd definitely get the 501s.. stupid SRS mixer is located in such a awkward place... :: mumble ::

EDIT: I take that back.. it looks like the Senn 155s are a USB "no sound card" headset. I don't like that at all... That just leaves these ICEMAT Black Siberas.. anyone know if these have boom mic, or is it a clipon?

Of course.. I wouldn't be completely against jury rigging a high quality set of headphones with a semi-mediocre microphone via the wonders of tape.. or something.. if someone thinks that option is viable. Other than that, any suggestions within this pricerange (or, perhaps.. slightly over.. but not much!) would also be appreciated.

I'd have to agree, it's all about the headphone and sound quality, concentrate your efforts there. A microphone is such a minor consideration, i would never recomend you let it influence your headphone choice. You can always follow thru with a nice cmoy headphone amp, or hit ask MisterX to build you one.
 
Well.. if that's the situation, you guys have any suggestions for decent headphones in the same pricerange? I'm admittedly lost when it comes to headphone stats..
 
Well, gave that about three run throughs... and it looks like it's between these:

Beyerdynamic DT231
Sennheiser HD-280 Pro
Sony MDR-V6/MDR-7506

... judging from the review, the HD-280 Pros have the highest average quality.. and are still within my pricerange. They only places they are rated low are portability (not an issue) and soundstage, which I'm not entirely certain about.

Any of ya got a second opinion here? Not that I don't trust the website, but there were only 1-4 reviews for each of these, so even 1 more person's opinions would alter the averages ;)
 
There is an add on mic for the HD280s but I yet to find a place that sells it so.......
 
I liked the HD-280s because they made the rest of the world very quiet so that I could listen to my music. They also sounded pretty dang good ampless, driven by my Revo, Intel onboard audio, and my Nomad JB3.
 
Well, after a little more looking around... It's down to either Sennheiser 280 Pros or PC150 headset. The Pros seem to be the only mid-high quality headphones in my price range, but get sorta mixed reviews everywhere I look. Of course, it might just be that they're being reviewed by people who've experienced the $200+ setups, unlike myself.. but maybe not. The PC150s are about half as expensive, have the mic pre-equipped, and from what little I understand about the specs, would be slightly better than my current ones.

I'd only be using it for games and mp3s (128kbs-300ish on a few)... I'm not entirely sure the 280s would even be getting used as intended in such situations.

Can anyone vouch for the PC150s? Would I be getting twice the quality for twice the price with the 280s?
 
Personally i don't own either so i can't say. Try the search our audio forum for the pc150 and i bet you get a ton of decent feedback.

On a related note, my friend is looking for an overall-good sub-$70 headphone and he's currently looking to audition the hd280, Senn eh350, bever dt231. I'm personally curious about all three of them so i may go with him when he tries them out.

Be sure to use froogle when pricechecking as you can often find the best price there. Fair word of warning though, froogle's good prices will make you want to shop for an even better pair. :D
