So I'm running a single thread program on a VM and I was wondering if I should change the config on it. Currently it is 1 socket with 4 cores. And I feel like it runs fairly slow.

It's a minecraft server with 16gb of ram witha Opteron 6128 spanned over 8 hard drives.

Minecraft's weakest point is IO, if u wanna see a huge boost in performance, use some of that ram as a ramdisk. Are you running vanilla, bukkit, tekkit, any other mod packs?

Depending on your dynmap settings, that mod puts tons of IO load on a server. Default settings will have it render anytime a block is placed or destroyed... so if you place or destroy a ton of blocks it renders just as many times. Then it gets a backlog so even if you stop, it sits and tries to catch up.

Gotta watch out of IC2 loops, and other things that could slow down the system too. I'm not 100% sure what's in lite, but it doesn't take but 1 bad machine to really bring a server down. I know our [H] tekkit server is destroyed when someone's machine malfunctions bad enough.
