How do you tell if a p4m is a 479 or a 478 pin before buying it? I have 4 p4m's that are 478 but I guess it is luck of the draw I havem't gotten one of the 479's yet is it only the centrinos and dothans or is it others as well?

They will all have an S-spec code on the chip that is 5 digits long and starts with SL. Go to the Intel website and search for "Spec Finder" and from there you will be able to input all the numbers and get full specs for the chips.

only the pentium-m's (NOT pentium 4-m's) are socket 479. The cores include banias, dothan, and yonah at this point. (though yonah uses yet another different pinout, so banias and dothan use different sockets from yonah too  )

All pentium 4-m's are going to be regular socket 478.
