Socket 478 Pentium M???

Ok this page has me really confused.

It looks like some of the Penitum Ms are actually socket 478 not socket 479.

Does that mean you could just put a Penitum M is a socket 478 board?

In short... Yes, and yes. I had one that I sold to another member here, worked fine, but they default to a 12x multiplier in a desktop board.

That's a Pentium M he's talking about, you're thinking of the Pentium 4-M, which is just a Pentium 4 optimized for mobiles but uses the same Socket478.

Pentium M are called 478 because they physically only have 478 pins, but the socket it plugs into acutally has 479 socket "holes" (dunno what else to call them), and are also keyed differently from regular socket 478 chips. So you can't install a Pentium M into a desktop P4 board. Moreover, the pinouts are physically different from a Pentium M and a Pentium 4 (or Pentium 4-M).

As Asian Dub Foundation mentioned Asus makes an adapter for the Pentium M so you can use it in Socket478 Asus boards (only support Intel chipsets however).
