In my new computer i am chosing between the Socket T(lga 775) or the 478 socket. I was wondering if there were any difference between the 2 and which one to go with, right now i am going with the Socket T because i have seen a great deal of boards with PCIe on them with the socket t.

All LGA775 boards are PCI-Express/DDR2, and socket 478 is pretty much at the end of its life, since all new Intel desktop Pentium 4 chips are LGA775.

If you want the cost that comes with DDR2 and if you want PCI-Express and some future expandability, then go LGA775. The other major difference is that LGA775 chips tend to run hotter than socket 478 chips due to the 90 nm process, among other factors.

edit: well, I've been informed that there are LGA775 boards that aren't PCI Express and DDR2. There are boards that have i875 chipsets paired with LGA775.

The 915 Chipset doesn't have to use DDR2, some manufacturers chose to, others didnt.

Also they do have AGP options if you want the 775 w/ AGP.

Definitely get the LGA775 over the 478

yeah the DFI board is a 875P-T which is AGP .. lga775 .. and uses DDR1
then they have a 925 chipset board that uses PCI-E .. DDR2 and is lga775

All Intel i915x/i925X/i925XE boards are LGA775. They also do not support AGP. However some manufacturers are making LGA775 boards with the older i865PE/i875P chipsets.

There are some i915 boards with the AGP Express socket. Don't buy into that stuff. Those are crap. The AGP Express port is two combined PCI sockets and therefore lose all the bennifits of true AGP. So you can have a 6800 perform like a 5200. (Not sure if performance is that bad or not, but it's bad.)

The i915x chipset supports DDR1 and DDR2. Some manufacturers have boards that support one or the other or even both. So you can go either way on that.

The i925X/i925XE chipsets only support DDR2.

And actually although Northwoods run cooler than Prescott's the reality is that socket 478 Prescott's run hotter than LGA775 Prescotts due to differences in the thermal solution for the platform.

The last processors to be made for socket 478 are the 3.4GHz Prescott and 3.4GHz Northwood and 3.4EE (Gallatin based). Whereas with LGA775 there are 3.6GHz processors and a 3.8GHz shipping to OEM's right now.

I would also like to point out that some great overclocking results are being obtained with LGA775 processors. Of course this is true with Intel chips anyway.

Yea i was already going to go with the lga 775 and i am going to stick with that. Thanks guys for all the input.
