Ok, I need a HDD asap! I'm pretty much running out of space on my current drive ( 80Gb SeaGate Barracuda 7,200 IDE 8mb ), so I need a bigger and faster HDD! But....they all look the same, and they all have pretty much the same specs....so which do I get? I looked through the buying guide, but i'm still lost...

i'm torn between...

I'm leaning towards the Seagate because of the awesome price, but I dont want a slow drive ( if it is? )
 
Note the rebates that must be submitted for the WD drives suggested. Also note that you will have a shorter warranty on a WD drive than a Seagate. WD's drives are much quieter now than in the past, but the Seagate is a solid drive, with the best warranty you can get.

Check out ZipZoomFly. ZZF does a better job of packing and shipping drives, and they are cheaper than Newegg on some drives. You're asking to waste some of your hard-earned cash if you automatically presume Newegg always has the best price.

Unfortunately, being "lost," as you describe it, is all too common when purchasing hard drives. That's the very reason why I put the Buyer's Guide together -a lot of people want the quitest drive they can find. Others want the most reliable. Still others want the best performance. As you can see from the long list of recommendations, every brand has something going for it, and at least one area where they fall behind the competition. Really, none of the drives are bad per se. Just pick the factor that's most important to you, and buy what you like based on the info that's out there. A Seagate drive won't let you down.
