I'm trying to fix an AthlonXP box that I have sitting here. Yesterday, I cleaned the HSF and processor of its previous thermal paste application and re-applied AS5.
Now, it loaded up once but froze. On hard reboot, it told me that the windows file was corrupted and now it does a few funny things:
every other reboot gets stuck on the first screen (the one that says amount of memory and processor speed) but stops at the amount of memory it does not show the processor speed.
the other reboots, goes through but sometimes when booting from CD gives me a corrupted screen (a bunch of random letters). if I dont get this screen it'll go into Windows setup but hangs while its loading the files (can't tell it to repair or reinstall or w/e).
so my question is, is the system overheating or does this go beyond temps (something wrong with hardware)? that said, I have the following:
AthlonXP 2400+
Abit NF7
any recommendations on a HSF? The PS is really close to the mobo so nothing huge. Right now I'm just using a Coolermaster hsf I got from microcenter (do not remember the model number)
