Yup.

Got all the systems up I can, they are all crunching away, don't want to waste cycles doing games or other boring things like that...

Recently I switched the PSU inside my main rig to a 2fan one (last one only had one, that sucker got hot...)

But I still have the bug to play with computer junk, so i'm doing some light case modding..

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1004267

What is everyone else up to with their computers? any mods? tweaks?

Oh yea, the PSU change in my qpack dropped the cpu temp from 56'C to 41'C (under load of course..)

Well since I fried my home boxen for some contest I can't recall what it was (ohh that fagbowl deal), I brought home the 3.2 CPU to put on home boxen in place of the 2.4 Celeron.

I've got a few more boxen to put up tomorrow at work, going on vacation for a week so need to make sure it's all doing something.

I want to setup a file server at home, I've got porn spread all over the place.

Anyone have any idea on what to do with 100+ units of Western Digital hard drives- 40 GB ATA 8 MB cache? Some super monster RAID shitux thingy?

I'm a thinking about a major borging spree while off work, 100+ units maybe...work boxen.

No place... No idea what I'm doing, not going into the office (much) I guess. It's time from '05 I need to use up.

I've got tons-o-crap of house stuff to do, spend time with the little one.

I've been trying to figure out if its safe to kill the fan on my southbridge...I find the noise that it makes really grating. Right now, once I figure out how to quiet it down, my computer should be around the "bearable" stage.

It's possible to do that, but the power draw requirements are going to be *huge*. Like ~15A on 110 for the drives. And you'd need a buttload of ide controllers, too. And maybe raid 5+5+0 to get decent speeds... IOW, eBay them and buy 10x400gb drives instead. 1/10 the power draw, same size.

Yay major borging spree! :D

Me? I'm chilling, working 8+ hours a day, trying to earn enough in a month to buy an Opteron box - just a 240 to start with, then wait for socket M1 etc to come out and get some 285s around next xmas :D Basically work is taking up all my time, but that's okay. I'm hoping to get into Guild Wars next semester, which means I need to add another rig to be a gaming box. And that means I have to figure out where to put all the machines. Time to rearrange the ol' dorm.

Work is going well; decent pay, fun people, and the job isn't hard at all. Can't talk too much about it. School looks like it's gonna pretty much suck next semester - 8-10 MWF, 11-6:45 TTh, 17 credits - but it's still fun living on campus. I'm gonna try spending weekends on campus for a semester and see how it goes, so that means (at first at least) mega-forum-spam time on Sunday or so.

My computer? Much, much happier now that it's got 1gb of ram (merry christmas me!) - I'd need to get another case to do any modding, this one's pretty much modded out. We did some work on our fileservers a week back, but nothing since then. I really need to find a good long-term project and tools and time to do it...

Anyways, that's all that's up at the mage residence. Hope you're all having a good January.

My brother's rig is a 2.4A that runs at 1.8 because he wanted more RAM. So he has a stick of PC100 and PC133, which screws stuff up. Now...this is sucks because my mom's rig uses a gig of PC2700, and ever since I've got my new RAM (nine months ago now) I've had a gig of PC3200 sitting in my desk.

Soo..what I wanted to do was swap the PC3200 in my brother's comp (for some reason the whole idea of a mobo using PC100 RAM would probably not take DDR RAM didn't dawn on me) so we could put that baby at least at stock speed, and then maybe oc it. Of course...it didn't work...so I have to figure out a way to get a northbridge fan/heatsink onto my old IC7-Max 3.

It was acting weird, so I picked up an IC7-G, which works fine. Now I think it some the PSU or something..but that means swapping out the nb heatsink (which is paperclipped on and takes a good 30 minutes before it's good again) and trying my oc on it. Now..if I get around to finding some other nb cooler, then I can just wire that thing on the Max3 and popping that into my brother's rig.

If that happens..then maybe I can oc the 2.4 to something, which would be good.

Next problem is..my mom has a 2.4 Celeron D, which I've heard is awesome for oc'ing. Of course..the mobo doesn't allow me to get out of the BIOS. It's weird...I can get in, but once i try the save and exit, it's like the keyboard died. Kind of annoying...what I'm thinking is possibly trying a BIOS flash..but this is also a cheapo ECS mobo that comes in those Fry's combos. It's good enough to run stock..but it's a piece of crap for anything else...so I'm not betting on there even being a BIOS out.

So I have two motherboards that are kind of stupid that screwing everything up..and swapping around motherboards is a bit more difficult than swapping around RAM.

What's annoying is i have a gig of PC2700, a gig of PC3200, 256mb of PC100, and 256mb of PC133.

Of course...the "fastest" RAM (the PC3200) is the set sitting in my drawer...

-____-

Better news is...I'm planning on jumping on the AM2/M2 or high end s939 wagon when AM2/M2 comes out...so that means an extra rig sitting at home (my current one). Of course considering the amount of time I have for doing things, I probably won't get around to working out this stuff until then..

anyway...how do you have 100+ drives marty..?

well, the emachine is folding away on it's own. my laptop isn't folding right now (on battery :D)

currently, i'm doing 0% mods, i haven't turned on my gaming pc in weeks, school is my main priority . right now i'm benchmarking my ipaq and that takes around 20 minutes so yah

Found a Soyo Dragon and a 2133 MHz XP in the closet I forgot I had. Trying out Foldix on it but can't get logged in. :(

*edit* Got it working....nice. :)

Poo, the 3.2 don't wanna post in this system (it did a month ago...). Maybe I burnt the CPU and the MB on that run.

Mage- I've got all the drives sitting around. I have 1x ATA 100 RAID card, 2x PCI ATA 66 cards, add in the onboard IDE channels (4+8+4=16 drives= still only 640 gig). Not sure, just got them all sitting around, density is to low to really have any fun with.

If by chance you want to get rid of any of those, I wouldn't mind a couple :\

Marty: I've got 3 ata33 cards if you need 'em ;)

Haha, you managed to quote the "I got it fixed" and still give help on how to fix it :p

One thing that always boggles my mind is case modding-- I just don't understand it. This coming from a guy who can't keep a case on anything.

Don't get me wrong, some of them look cool at hell- but just not for me. I felt like silly getting fans with blue LED's (they happened to be the cheapest).

I'm working on trying to get afoldserver up, so I can get these random boxen i have here actually doing something. And get them out of my room, because my paretns are gettting kinda tired of the mess. So hopefully I'll be adding 3 PCs to my garden tonight. Borged 4 more p4's at work today. It was a good day :)

For me, case modding is all about utility. Look at the thread I linked above - it's all about getting it to fit, making it cool, etc. I added a temperature monitoring thingy to my other case, and made a window so you could see it. But in terms of lighting it, or adding "flair", I don't get it either. I do want my machines to look good, but I'm not about to do a CrimsonSky and spend months working on a case for several hours a day. But I still like reading his worklogs, it's amazing to me that he manages to stay motivated.

Recently upgraded the gaming box from an AXP-1700+@2.2, gig o ram, 6800gt to a A64-3700+@2.5, 2 gigs o ram, 7800gt. Added a couple hard drives to my server, set up apache with a forum and a photo gallery. Messing with perl, php, and mysql is fun. Otherwise, just been lazy.

I don't know how these people sit around with there stuff not all hooked up and running. They fitting things maken everything nice and neat... Me Fedex guy comes and i am skipping class to get something new running

I keep telling myself that I need to get my board out and get it RMA'd, I guess that depends on how lazy I wanna be this weekend. I'm sure it'll keep running paperclip style for a while. :D
