So...

I work at a grocery store...Publix is the name of the chain...really great company, anyway...

I was gathering some of my old lotto tickets I had laying around...I thought they were all losers because I usually check them and was going to throw them out...For some reason I thought, what the hell, I'm working in customer service tonight (next to the lotto machine) so I'll just check them anyway...

I won $365- which went towards my new xeon :D...but the part about it that pissed me off was that I was ONE number from hitting the jackpot...1 Million...lol makes me want to cry!

Anyway...At the very least I get more points from my new w3250 :D

Wow

I figure with the way I dump money into folding I better not get Into gambling lol

I've only ever played once, I won 5$ then bought more tickets and was flat again lol

ya i did that a while ago when I was working my high school job in a convenience store. Usually I'd win 10-20 a night just off dumb people it's pretty sweet.

How did you win off dumb people?
They leave winning tickets you cashed in?

PowerBall is 200 Million tonight. I sure could build a nice farm with that. (and a few other things)

If you have some money left over one of these would look nice in my house.

I would say... with that much money... maybe, what, an SR-2 board with dual hex 5690's and 24gigs RAM

Say, what, 3 racks full of those and a small room sized Air Conditioner to run them with, that would be a good use of the money :)

He'd still have some money left over to host one helluva beer and tamale festival for the [H]orde.

Screw the tamales. I'll throw a [H]orde party but it will be BYOT. Instead I was thinking about 50,000 dual hex SR-2's with the rest going to electricity and a building for 3 years. If I can get custom 1U water cooling for the CPUs and massive air cooling for the boards, ram and PSUs then it could all be fit in about 1000 19" racks.

Besides putting out enough heat to warm 3,000 homes in the winter I think @4000mhz it would put out 5 billion ppd. In a day it would blow the total points for the [H] out of the water. In the 3 years that would be a total of 5 trillion points. It would be at least twice as fast as the top supercomputer today in the linpack benchmark. I would ask Tiger how it feels then go to the tamale festival.

Or I could send you each 1000 SR-2 custom 1u blades and give you the cash for an addition to hold 20 racks, a dedicated power line and electricity. Or I could waste an hour sitting at home looking at linpack benches.

LOL, if you had won that much money, why do I get a strong feeling the money would be used in other ways...? :D

If I won that much money I would buy a Rack full of Becktons :D

The truth is that no matter how high anyone's budget is, the biggest bang for the buck still yields the most PPD. So, if an i7 920 is the most productive per dollar as an example, then racks full of those would be the best use of the resources. Winning a lottery just multiplies the quantity you can buy.

But if money is no object?

I'd get a quad socket with the best chips available as my main system, and a farm with a designated budget to use that resource with the best bang for the buck to maximize it. But I could tell you guys right away that a very small potion of the winnings would go to hardware. There are other worthy things in life besides computing.

How much would it cost to build a blade center like the one that was getting 1mil ppd?

Yet another reason...
Damn, as if the buyout wasn't enough, Pardon the French, but what the fuck do we do to even slow them down?

It would take about that much, no way else to compete with a corporation's team

O well, I guess I'll just die trying!

The war is not lost yet. I figure we have till the middle of spring (about a month) to come up with a good plan. We need to devise a multi-stage strategy and tackle each obstacle one at a time. Everyone in the Top 10 should be at over 100k consistently. They have 11 members as of today @100k+. I'd like to determine if it's even possible to have the Top 5 at or above 200k, but I can see that might be wishful thinking for spring time frame. Then, we have to plan what to do to make up for Tiger's coming absence. That will be a loss of 200k a day for over a month, if I read hist post correctly. It appears that all the obstacles Fate can throw at us is being launched and we have to adapt to it.

The best we can hope for now is to stall them till the fourth quarter (fall). The overtake date at the beginning of the month was about 8 months. I knew it would drop several months in just a few weeks. I warned other members about that because it's a steeply inclined graph showing a high rate of change. At this rate of acceleration, we will lose the #1 spot at the break of summer (late June, early July), as I predicted recently. So, it's now or never for a solid strategy.

Well count me in for 100k before the end of April, Im pushing 65k now and have money In reserves for a rather large upgrade come SR-2

I could top 100k now, and I may do it for a week or so but it won't be sustained until sometime in April

Any good ideas to fight back? I was really hoping to hold the spot til my birthday in august, but I don't see that happening

that said, running the numbers, I think I'll level off around 125-140k when my farm is all done, and that will wrap me up for the rest of the year pretty much
I wish I could do more but I can't now

Yes. For one thing, all our members have to deploy everything they have at their disposal and that includes me. There are people with capable hardware that either aren't being used or not being properly/fully utilized. I won't state specifically but I'm aware of this. We can have our Top 10 100k+ objective fulfilled by the end of the month at my estimations from this alone. I know it can be accomplished. I'm going to stop procrastinating and start reorganizing my hardware this week. I can build another -bigadv system just from parts laying around and swapping quality parts from systems that are unworthy to run them. I should have done this weeks ago.

That is totally understood and would never push anyone beyond their means.

Well, I'll be selling my GX2's to make way for SR-2, but I guess I could fire them up real quick for a quick surge, hopefully SR-2 and Westy will drop next week so I can offline them and get on to building bigger things, I've got 650$ in paypal already, just waiting for a release date on that board..

took another look at my current hardware, looks like I'll only push 92-95k full blast, damn

Ok, well, here's the question, if I just want to throw anotnher GX2 in Nostromo just midstroke, can I copy ther current gpu folders, delete work and que, change config, copy and edit short cuts, then just shut down, plug her in, and restart and everything will work (pending a second driver install obviously)

Usually I remove drivers, remove folding, sweep it and start fresh
But at 5.4 months and falling, time is of the essence!

Yes, that's essentially what I do when I add cards to my systems. I just copy folders, delete work done by the other card, create new shortcuts and add appropriate flags to point to the new card. You will also need to extend the desktop for each additional GPU you add. The client starts and downloads new work like it has always been there. Then I make OC adjustments specific to the new card in RivaTuner.
