I have a friend who currently owns one of these attrocities (no offense to anybody who has one):

Now, personally, I think that whole checkerboard thing looks retarded as all hell, and he's about to go through a big upgrade of sorts (p4 --> Core Duo) and he's considering getting a new case to go along with the other shiny stuffs hes got (especially since after a mishap at a LAN with that door lock thing, his case is kinda gimped and busted) but we're having problems deciding on a case.

Everything I recomend he shoots down with "bah too bland" or "boring". He hates Lian-Li's, he hates Antecs, I just dont know what to do with him. He's got some sort of fetish for Thermaltake and is wanting to either get another Xaser or get a Kandalf or something. He's even considering an Asus Vento.

What I'm wondering is if there are some other cases that I can suggest to him that may still appeal to him, but wont outright be embarassing?

May not be my business to pry so adamantly into his comptuer fashion sense, but I can't just let my buddy walk around with a Mullet, you know. :eek:
 
Point out to him the practical aspects in which Tt cases fail.

I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but my little sister has one of those Bozo the Clown cases with checkerboard on the front. It weighs half a damn ton, empty, and is a nightmare to work on. The expansion card bracket holder thing doesn't work worth a damn, and outwardly it looks like it's from the eighties. The bad part of the eighties. Her one came with seven or eight 80mm fans, a fancontroller for four of those, and instructions that reckoned that you could hook up all the fans to it.

If he does wind up getting another Tt, don't let him ever forget it if he admits regret.
 
you may shoot me, but I actually just bought a Vento 3600 quite cheap because it had a malfunctioning door mechanism due to a sticky side panel.
cons:
- Side panel is very tricky to get on/off, especially when using the included CPU shroud.
- Rear fan is too loud at 12V, good at 7V
- front fan needs silencing also
- third hd can not be easily installed since screw holes are aligned for floppy drives
- cable management thingy collides with most PSU power plugs and/or DVI/VGA adapter&monitor plug combinations (too long)
- heavy beast

pros:
- if you take your time (and maybe even remove some plastic temporarily) there´s a whole new world of cable routing options.
- quite silent if used with the right hardware (probably due to its weight)
- plastic feels and looks sturdy and rugged, no el cheapo stuff here
- motherboard can be installed with ease even without a removable tray
- lighting is not overdone but subtle and sleek

If you go for a pre-modded case there are quite worse ones to choose from. The Vento lowered the temperatures of my 3700 san diego by about 5°C from my previous case and since I only paid 50Euros including an Asus-branded 450W PSU (normal price in the shop was 99 Euros but since it was a display unit with a sticky door and some (now polished and invisible) scratches...) I didn´t mind its sheer size and weight.

And I also don´t mind what anybody else says, I like it because for once this is a case where the screwless design for cards and drives works! (HDs have to be secured with conventional screws though)
All in all a no-hassle-install, and running cool and quite silent ever since (after I modded the fans a little).
 
Go find someone that has one of those fugly "mexican wrestler" cases that we all pretty much agreed were the ugliest on the planet, and tell him if he doesn't pick something, that you're going to force him to use that!! :eek:
 
Well, we went over to Fry's (to pick up some DVD+R's) and decided to wander around the case section, and he was awed by the 900 they had on display. That is a good sign!

But.... in the end his Thermaltake fetish is still strong, so he's leaning towards the Kandalf still. Ehhh, disheartening, but I've given up on him already. :eek:
 
tell him it's cables aren't long enough to reach the headers, and you can't get replacements
