Just got my brand new SN25P along with 2GB corsair xms ram, 7200.8 250GB seagate, x800xl, and an A64 3700+. What's been worrying me are my proc temps that i've been getting since putting everything together. Last night once i had everything built, I had the computer on for about 2 hours...ran 3dmark05 etc. After running for said 2 hours, I tried doing a reboot, and checked temps in the BIOS, the chipset was around 45, and the CPU was at around 60C. Also, this morning when I booted up my machine straight into the bios, the CPU was reading 55C.I have a feeling this is a little high, especially for the slight amount I pushed the hardware. I know of at least 2 things that I should change but didn't out of being impatient to build heh, but i'm curious as to what I should go about first.

1) I used the thermal paste that came with the shuttle, and tried the "grain or 2 of rice in the center of chip" method when i've always done "spread out even layer" before. Should resetting my cpu and/or getting some better thermal paste help my temps dramatically?

2) i'm using the smartfan setting right now, which according to the manual doesn't reach full speed till 80C?? Should i switch it to one of the "performance settings" to have the fans at a higher RPM more often?

3) due to some troubles mounting the HD on the top rack of the shuttle, I ended up installing it underneath the DVD drive in the drivecage. Will it be safe in that spot, or should I seriously consider moving it to the top? I'm not sure if im getting the right temp, but SMARTFAN says it's running at about 45C after being shut down all night.


last but not least) what's the best windows temp monitoring tool I can find? My old system used motherboard monitor, but it seems like that's been discontinued. I downloaded SPEEDFAN after browsing some sites, but it gives some crazy readings (-130C to 100C) for some of the chip sensors.
 
I got 20-30's for proc temps with my FX-55 on average. Highest I have seen has been in the 40s. I use mid fan level, not the "smart" setting or whatever it is called. This little case does a great job of cooling the CPU in my experience.
 
i'm beginning to think it's definitely the way I installed the heatsink which is causing the problem. With hmonitor reporting 54C, I'm feeling barely lukewarm air flowing out of the heatsink. While i'm down there i may route the HD to the top this time to give the case some more breathing room. I'll post back with my finidings.
 
Most of the time, my case temps have been higher than my CPU temps, so you may be correct that the HS/F was installed incorrectly. Remeber to cross tighten the screws a little at a time, and tighten them fully.

I had my raptor below the burner without any problems... until lately that is, so maybe mounting the hdd on top isn't such a bad idea in retrospect... :/
 
That's a bit high for a 3700+. I definately think you should try to reapply the thermal paste. Maybe you can follow these instructions instead.

My cpu runs ranging from 41-46 on idle and I have a 4400+ which should run pretty hot already. And this is me knowing I kinda messed up applying it because I forgot to swing back the exhaust fan when putting on the heatsink so I had to take off the heatsink and reseat it (which is generally bad) :p

if it aint crashing then i would not worry , if the air comin is out the fans feels warm , then again i would b too worried
 
I ended up cleaning off the old paste and trying a new application, the arctic silver style, now i'm getting 43C which, although this is apparently high, is much more comfortable for me. As long as I don't pass 55-60ish on the highest limit of stress tests, I Think I should be fine.
 
That's good enough I think, the shuttle smartfan doesn't kick-in until 60+ I believe. I have mine set on smart fan and even so, playing games, it rarely kicks in and when it does, it only lasts for about 5 seconds max. I think as long as you don't surpass 65 on load, you are just fine. The only downside to that is your shuttle might be a little noisy :p

yeah 43 is pretty good. Some folks here like to keep their place cold as an ice box, so of course their temps are much lower than say mine would be (I like the house about 76-78 degrees in the summer since I am in Texas). SO if your ambient room temperature is high, then of course your case / CPU temps will be higher than others.
 
Smart Fan = Dumb Fan

Whatever you do, DON'T use the Smart Fan setting. The fan was going at about 600-700rpm and my temps got really high. The graphics card would overheat and artifact. The computer would lock up every few mins when playing a game.

Solution: I set the fan setting to low or whatever they call it in the BIOS and my problems were all gone.

Get the latest BIOS version 'O'. There is a 'bug' in previous versions that show the CPU to high. Also, make sure you have cool N' quiet enabled.

To enable;
1) You need the 'O' BIOS
2) Set power options to minimal
3) Latest AMD processor software installed

thanks for the info about cool n' quiet and the new bios, I'll try it out when i get home from work. As for the 'O' version bios, is that simply the fn25s01o.bin file from shuttle's website? I don't see any others, so I'll guess it's the right one...

EDIT: another heat issue, although completely unrelated to the CPU...when I turn off my comp but not the power supply switch in the back, the PSU stays warm, even after 24+ hours. Granted, i've never checked for this before on any of my tower boxes, but is this normal? Seems strange, and a little worrying since I have my HD resting right on top of it.

Yes that is the 'O' version, which is the latest.
 
takes awhile for some pastes to cure too, so your temps will go down.

Mine were kind of high at first, but they've gone down considerably. They're still not great, but I've got 2 10k rpm drives, 1 7200 rpm drive, x800xl, and an fx-55, though, so I can't expect much.
 
With my computer just running itunes and me websurfing, nvmonitor shows:

CPU: 28c
System: 45c

That is a fx-55, two 74 gig raptors, another hard drive, a dvd writer, and an x800xl.

So today.. I decided to reapply my thermal compound since I screwed it up the first time and now it idles between 35-37 (10 degree difference) :p

Hmm.. I used the paste that comes with the computer and I get low 40's when my AMD64 3000 is under load... is this a little high?

Perhaps I should go get some AS

low 40's under load is VERY good.
 
Others in the thread seem to do better, with procs that are faster - the funny thing is, the CPU not under load, jsut doing normal tasks is also about lower 40's, just slightly lower.
 
Well what is your ambient room temp.

I think a more accurate number temperature over ambient in your environment. If you like keeping your place at 27C (80 F), your shuttle is not going to idle at 28C, but at least at 30C and most likely 35-38C. Those kind of temps are common in states in the southern US. Some of our bigger friends and northern buddies like to keep their places in freezer like temps like 20-21C (68-72F). So it depends where you are and how cold you like it in your place.
 
I idle at 45-46 and load 50-51. GPU X850XT idles at 47 and 75 load which is VERY good because I have seen other people's x850xt be 90.
 
my 3800 Venice idles at 23 with C&Q on and get to high 40s under load, and my x850xt at PE speeds idles at 37 and get up to 60 under load in BF2 with everything turned to High.
