A lot of this depends on the processor involved. SMP is technically designed to be used with a quad core. However, many Dual Core processors can handle the work units. The real test is can your processor finish the work unit in time. If you can make the final deadline you can get much better points. We usually like to make the preferred deadline however, because if you do not finish before the preferred deadline they will send that particular work unit out to another person to compute. Thus, the same unit will be computed twice which is a waste really.
Now, the SMP has its own problems. It is much more likely to have problems than the basic uniprocessor, however, in the last few months I really haven't had any problems so much of that has been fixed other than the initial setup.

Yup. Are you familiar with fahspy and fahmon? They are programs that will monitor your folding at home and give you a good idea of when you will be finishing a work unit, and how many points per day you could be producing ideally. If you install one of those programs along with your SMP install and monitor the SMP with the program, after a few hours it should give you some idea if you will make the preferred deadline.
As a note, while you still get the points as long as you don't miss the final deadline, the [H]orde likes to pride itself in doing as much as possible for the scientific process for Stanford. As such, most people will switch away from SMP even if they are making the final deadline but missing the preferred as a courtesy to the project.

Well everything is looking promising so far. Its going to finish 4.5 days ahead of preferred deadline and the pts are pretty 
Yeah, im running FHASpy both at home and work, makes it easier. Wish I could find a way to link the work one to home so that I could monitor everything at once.
Update: Even better, it says I'm gonna wake up in the morning and start my day off with 2k pts in the bank!!
