Is there a way to make SMP run in the background or at least minimize upon startup? I couldn't find a list of tags available...
 
Search this thread for instructions on how to install SMP as a service. That is your best bet if you want to do that.

Keep in mind though, that if you restart your computer you will have to go into services and stop the service every time or you will loose the work you have done so far.
