I've noticed alot of ATI and nVidia users saying that while the GT is statisicly faster in games, the ATI cards like the X800 XT and X800 XT PE run smoother. Why is this?
 
many reasons:

- drivers
- biased/uninformed opinions
- game code optimization
- different computer configurations
- overal computer "health"
- different perceptions and sensitivities
- different bases of comparisons (time demos, aquamark, 3dmark, etc)

I personally have never gamed on a system with an x800 based card, but I do own a 6800GT; but I have never really experienced a lack of smoothness on any games (D3, FC, MoH:pA, RTW, CoD, UT2k4); plays them all just fine, as I'm sure the x800 would as well.
 
Too many variables to nail it down, but it would seem that the 6800's suffer some st..st...st..stutter on certain hardware setups, but not on others. Some of us are lucky and can try both and keep what we like the most...for others it is a bitch of a decision.

Drivers could be the culprit....and software running in the background. With my 6800GT I had to turn off MBM5 because every time it polled the temps, it caused a big hiccup in game. Annoying. The ATI does not exhibit this condition for me...so I kept it.

I was flabbergasted that my pal's 9800XT's were smoother in gameplay than my 6800GT....actually it pissed me off a bit. They were not faster or prettier, just smoother. Now I have both smoooth and fast in the game I cared the most about currently, Far Cry. Doom3 still runs great too...
 
This is the reason I went ATI.

I'll sacrafice a little speed for smoothness and better visual quality.

I like this answer...very good answer.

I've never had an ATI board but I have a friend that used to swear by them. Now he's in it for the "bang for the buck" and he doesn't really notice real differences. Neither can I when I'm using one of his machines either really. It's all in perspective.
