Smoothing out Front

I recently scrapped our older hp pavilion 6835, and then I realized that it had great modding potential!

The only problem was that the front plastic cover was broken off and the rest was scratched too much to fix. So I took those pieces off, but the metal front has a lot of depressions/holes/rivets...

So how would I go about smothing this front out? I really like the size of this case 11'x7.5"x12", and it's removeable motherboard tray, but I'm not sure if the front will work out.

Sorry if the pics suck..

The top plastic piece might actually be useful. It has a cd-container in it and would be perfect for my favorite games swapping.

Give the front a face lift. Get either a piece of plastic (plexi or lexan) or a piece of metal (steel or aluminum) and cut it to fit. Then just pop rivet it on. You'll have the drive holes in the case to so you can mark them off and cut them out if you want.

...just a thought....

You could quite possibly make a fiberglass front for it then attach that to the front however you feel like. Could look quite nice as well.

Sounds great and all, but wouldn't the nasty looking metal still be there? I suppose I could tint the plastic dark or something eh? I'm not sure if I'll be using a floppy drive so I'll just cover that spot up and if I need it later I could always cut it out I need to do some sanding and cutting to make the front surfaces flat though for sure. I'll do that tomorrow maybe...

I'd use a thick piece of plexi/polycarbonate, paint it, and attach from inside the case. Or get some nice looking allen head bolts. Cool little case, would make a kick ass HPTC.

I recently found my old box of fans. 6 120X120x38 fans! 3 papst heavy metal 1 Nidec and 2 interfans. I also found a couple 80mm, but I think maybe one of the 120 in the front and a 80mm blowhole or psu fan.

Cut a plexi front, paint the backside of the plexi with Fusion paint. Also paint the case frame. Use acrylic tube around 8/32 bolts as standoffs to have the new faceplate standoff the front of the case. If you need a few inches of acrylyc tube, PM me, I have a ton laying around. Alternately use PVC tube over the bolts.

I'm working on something similar atm. Basically my plan is to screw a sheet of blue tinted perspex, and then a sheet of aluminium diamond pattern tread plate (seperated by standoffs made from small diameter copper pipe) onto the front. The tread plate covers all the nasty looking bits such as you have there, and if you want to cut holes for the drives, it's easy enough to work with. Then the perspex makes it look good :), I'm contemplating dremelling something into the treadplate as well, to match the window I have on the side. I'm not bothering with drives in this machine as it's only an old P200 I use for a DC++ server at LANs so no optical or floppy drives are needed. No photos as yet though sorry, so I can't show you what it could look like.

Anyhoo, the point is, you have the perfect blank canvas to make this thing look how you want it to.... the only limits are you imagination, and your pocket....
