I have a Western Digital 80 gig hdd 7200 8mb cache about 2 months old..

What I cant figure out is the smart diagnostics... The drive before this one was the exact same one, which I took back to frys after the smart dropped from 100%-60% in a week.. this drive has now started a downward tumble from 100% to 89% and today its at 69%..

I cant figure out what may be causing these smart errors... the drive works fine and as far as I can tell I havent had any problems but I do trust smart and I use this drive as my backup storage drive so I really dont want it to go pooF on me.

Previously I thought it was my generic psu.. so I replaced it with an antec.. voltages stable.. then maybe heat... so I put a fan on it now its about 100F.. then I thought my Dance Dance Revolution might be banging the heads on the platters :p but then I figured that if its vertical and not operating when I play it really shouldnt be an issue right?

So I am baffled.. I have no idea what could be causing the drive to give me smart errors. :( I shall post a screenshot as soon as I can get connect to it through vnc.

:confused: I dont think a 2 month old hdd that I dont use very much would have problems like this.. if I ran BT and had it folding 24/7 then maybe but I just used it to watch some anime... at most 24 hrs so im confused.

I'd suspect cables, controller drivers, controller, memory corruption, in that order.
 
So its possible data corruption is increasing the amount of error leading to smart degrasion... and the hardware undamaged.
If it is... it would mean that my last 4 hdds is dead because of that IDE ooh crud ill change the iDe

Ill look for the corruption guide later, but if the hdd is right next to the psu would that be an issue? My space saving design left me with that hdd next to psu

The controller/drivers that is the chipset thing right? I will check if VIA has any updates

Things I have changed..
Replaced IDE, used a different line from psu.
Updated with via drivers
Repositioned the hdd so its far from the psu now. (in the theme of corruption)
No overclocking so dont have to change that..

Smart at 69% will let it sit for a while and see what it does.
 
Seems the drive has decided to stay at 69%..

Is there any way of interpreting the data to say figure out if its data that was getting errors causing smart.. or the hardware that had issues?
