Let me say first that I really like my P182, and have a Core i7 920 on the way with a mobo from intel's retail edge program.

Slap it into my P182 with a TRUE right? yeah, well... the wife is getting my q6600/mb/ram/8800gt .... the easiest thing to do here is give her this box and take out my 74gb raptor.... so, i'm shopping for a new case/HSF combo.

I would like to do a mild OC (~3.0ghz-3.2ghz) and am after some advise on a HSF that will fit in (another) P182 ... or maybe a P193? Why P193?
1. I like antec's fit & finish
2. I like the price / performance
3. I like the extra room / support clips for a gtx275 that i'm likely to purchase
4. better case airflow

I understand that with the P193, the 200m fan on the side prevents taller (TRUE / NH-U12P) HSF's from being installed.

I am also lead understand that a P182 can accommodate a TRUE (...correct??)


... should i choose the P193, what are some good LOWER HEIGHT HSF solutions?
Ive always liked Thermalright products, but all their 1366 solutions are TRUE based =(

How about a Noctua NH-U9B? Noctua offers a 1366 mounting kit ...

Found a review where they compare it to some big coolers on a Q6600/1.45v/3.4ghz
the TRUE black got avg load temp of 53.7, where this coolers was 61.7 ... now if i could only find a review using an i7 920.

What the heck is the TDP of a 3.4ghz/1.45w Q6600?
from Intel: max TDP q6600 = 105, max TDP core i7 920 = 130 ... but these are stock #s.

does the 1.45v/3.4ghz Q6600 exceed the 130w TDP of the core i7? by how much?

So, here's the question:
Assuming good case airflow, will this HSF be able to cool the i7 920 @ 3.0-3.2 ????

right off the bat i can say yes.. @ 1.45v the q6600 easily exceeds the 130w TDP.. but then again intels numbers have always been pretty conservative to begin with..

theres a lot of choices out there for heatsinks on the i7.. some are built better for extreme overclocking.. 3.8ghz or higher and some do well on stock clocks..

ill see what numbers i can find.. but i do think the s1283v is smaller then the TRUE but not by much.. maybe 1 or 2mm..


edit* so far in my looking ive found that 140mm is the maximum HSF height that the p193 will support.. now just trying to find a decent heatsink in that range is my next objective..


edit2* a good choice might be the sunbeamtech core-contact freezer HSF.. seems to be one of the shorter better performing heatsinks.. though id wait for some one thats actually used the heatsink on an i7 to give their opinion..

You should take a look at the Hyper N 520. It has a mirror copper base and twin 92mm fans in a pushpull form. They are also uniquely staggered so they increase surface area without adding to the height.

First of all, the Q6600 has a TDP of 95W, not 105W. As for the TDP of a chip at 3.4GHz with 1.45V, using the idealized formula for the power consumption of a processor (P = C*V^2*f), it would be approximately 162W assuming a chip with a VID of 1.325V. The specific value would depend on the VID of the CPU in question.

Yes, it does exceed the TDP of a stock i7 CPU, and by approximately 32W as you can see above. Now, those numbers are just an approximation, and the actual value would probably be slightly higher than that, but it's a good starting point.

Also, the side panel fan of the P193 is actually set outside the case, so it might not interfere with a tower-style heatsink. You might not have to compromise altogether.
 
from everything ive read, the p193 doesnt get along with TRUE / NH-12B etc...

anyone?
