Me and my dad have been looking into building a small cheap computer to use as a home file server, and possibly a game server for LAN parties. Any suggestions on what we will need and what a cheap box we could do this with?

You mentioned "building" a server, so this probably isn't the avenue you're wanting to go. But, I picked up an HP e-PC (1.2GHz Celeron, 384MB RAM, 20GB HDD) for $100 at a computer show. It's not very expandable, but it only uses a small amount of power and fits nicely in a little cupboard. You may want to start with something like that and "upgrade" it to suit your needs (its four USB ports are handy).

I would advise more ram if your going to use it for a server - ranging from 1-2gb depending what game and how many people you plan to host.
