Slow hard drive problem.

Hello, i just purchased a new Dell PowerEdge SC 420 server, and it has a 80GB maxtor hard drive in it, SATA. Its called the Maxtor 6Y080M0.

I have run a few benchmarks on it, and they all say the same thing.

The average speed of it is 3.7MB/s (read speed)....................... Its basically a straight line through the whole hard drive... as if something is servearly limiting its speed.

Does anyone have a clue as to why this is? Or has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

So far i have yet to hear from Dell tech support, and i was just wondering if anyone knew of something like this.

I looked through the BIOS, and all Hard drive settings are set for performance. It is running on Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Just out of morbid curiosity, I assume you have all appropriate SATA drivers loaded for the windows install? What does the device manager->properties look like for the controller? Anything jump out at ya, like an unusual transfer mode?

I'm grasping at straws, but something simple may be the fix.
 
This is the first time ive ever worked with a SATA drive, so i do not know what should be installed with the system.

I did install the Intel chipset drivers for windows 2000 that were provided on a Dell CD.

I do not have anything that specifically states SATA, but there are IDE ATA controllers.
For the ATA controllers, DMA is enabled.

Also, the computer came with no OS, so obviously win2000 was able to install onto this drive (its the only drive)... but i wonder now if its not working correctly because there is no specific SATA drivers.

If i should have a SATA controller/driver, how and where could i find the correct one?

Well, I upgraded to Service Pack 3, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Now im getting around 45MB/s, much better.
