In my sons case an asus 970 strix is just a few millimeters too long. Anyone have suggestions for either a 970 or Sri 290/290x that's just slightly shorter. I'm not interested in those mini 970s. I have a good psu.

Mini GTX 970s are just exactly the same as any other regular GTX 970.... but anyway to answer your question you can try with the MSI 970 Gaming its about 2cm shorter than the Asus 970 Strix. or the EVGA 970 ACX 2.0 which its about 3cm shorter than the Asus 970 Strix.

Thanks for those suggestions

There aren't many reviews but looking the minis throttle down more and are louder at heavy performance.

I'm using a Gigabyte 970 ITX in my HTPC and it's very quiet at idle and fairly quiet with a custom fan curve at load even with a solid overclock. I'd recommend it if you want a lot of power in a small package. If you're firmly against the ITX then the basic Zotac card is pretty small, but it can be loud.

If the case is a tight-fit, it probably means there is not a lot of room for airflow? If that is the case then the reference GTX 970 from Best Buy might be the best option for the blower cooler. It's about 12mm shorter than the STRIX (267mm overall length).
